Conversion of contractors at Microsoft is around 20% in my experience, and generally not related to performance, but whether or not your team has budget when your contract + extension are coming to an end. Otherwise, you’re applying for Microsoft roles as an external hire (not on their payroll) and hoping someone takes you in despite working for them as a contractor.
You need your boss’s permission to apply for other roles, and sometimes they will not give their blessing under the guise of “we want to keep you here,” until your contract is coming to an end and there’s now no budget.
There is a very large contractor culture at Microsoft and getting converted can be very cut throat.
I got converted waaaaaay back when, and this is pretty much how it happened. So much depends on your boss and peer suppport from FTE on your team. Work those relationships!
I've seen contractors get converted to full-time employees, especially if they're knocking it out of the park with their work. If you're consistently delivering quality code, collaborating well with the team, and generally being a solid contributor, then yeah, your chances of getting hired on as a full-time employee definitely go up.
I worked for ~9 years @MSFT as a contractor, before the 18 months rule, I saw some of my buddies hired as "Blue Badges" as that's what they wanted and pursued that. Some of us saw it differently... we got paid for every hour worked, we were putting ~50 hours a week as many "Blue Badges" were too. Don't get me wrong, "BB" gets better benefits, RSUs, and perks a contractor doesn't.
My personal opinion... the chances are higher and quicker to start working as a contractor, and you can work your way in a "BB" position if you deliver quality work and lookout for hiring opportunities. I saw a manager ask a contractor "how would you like to make $$$ an hour to work for me?" Weeks later he was converted over to "BB" and was leading a team.
