Currently a 5th year litigation associate at a 6 attorney firm owned by one attorney. Earning a base salary of $110000. Usually get about $10,000 in bonus, but purely discretionary. Firm owner basically said in a year I would become a “shareholder” and start earning 25% of what I originate, but no promise of ever becoming an equity partner earning any percentage of what I collect. Is this a red flag and a dead end firm? I like what I do, but want to further my career and make more.

First, I believe you have every right to know what a path to equity partnership looks like. Second, how much do you or can you originate? This could be a financially valuable get for you.

You should be getting a percentage (up to 1/3) of any business you bring in from day 1.

Look around at job posts in your area to confirm. If you know what you’re doing, you should be making a lot more as a fifth year

Seems like the owner has no intention of letting go of control. Its' his baby and it apears he has no interest in sharing equity
