I wouldn’t go to McK for an internal role AND a 30k pay cut
Stay
FWIW I took a title downgrade and pay cut to join McKinsey from a boutique. 5 years later making way more than I would be if I had stayed and with better exit ops
How is career progression and WLB for internal roles McKinsey? Just got offered an internal role and on the fence..
Rising Star
Honestly it depends if you want to be in consulting longer term. If so, take McK. If not, stay and find your exit op. The money you’ll be at in a handful of years will make $30k fairly irrelevant.
Stay at D. McK can pull their usual downleveling stunts for generalist consulting, but internal t&d? Nope.
As a former Deloitter, McKinsey is so much better. Your comp over the next 2-3 years will be higher at McKinsey than Deloitte due to faster comp acceleration and better ancillary benefits like superior 401k match and bonus structure.
Comp and trajectory will not be higher in an internal role. Facts are wrong
Pro
I wouldn't go to McK. Period.
Switching would be a huge mistake.
You should leave D for a client facing role here to gain access to the additional progression and exit opportunity. T&D is not that so don't leave.
Source: I've worked with colleagues from T&D that switched to client facing with promises of career progression. They had the skills to be successful. It didn't work out. There are no guarantees.
Edit: the more I think about it, I'm genuinely embarrassed part of our organization had the arrogance to make an offer like that to you and apologize on their behalf.
McK internal role for a pay cut. How did they even make such an offer? I'm just thinking about the person who had to communicate this offer to you. Have to be pretty straight faced while making such offers 🤣🤣
Stay at D… if you love client work, an internal role at McK won’t make you happy… also you will not get as much increase in pay / exit opportunities
