Currently in leading BL. thinking what practice area I should claim, MA or cap market, minor PCR, if I’d like to move to in-house for big public firm one day. Equally interested in both in terms of substantive, but both sets of practice have different culture and people of different characters—-they say choose to work with the people you like, but people will not stay forever. I can’t choose another practice just because there are some mean people in one practice group now. Thoughts? Thanks!

Also, it’s not about people staying forever or your enjoyment—your longevity, your mental health, your ability to get good experience, your work quality, all are affected by the people you work with. Don’t underestimate it

Exactly. Nice people will help you network and will speak positively about you to clients, other attorneys in the firm, and potential employers. Mean people will do the opposite. I’ve seen people absolutely destroy the reputation of associates over nothing. You’re not wrong to be thinking about exit options but to my mind you’re really undervaluing being in a decent group

How many billable hours per week is considered at capacity? I’m getting pushback on boundaries I’m setting about additional matters and marketing work from my firm when I’ve been billing 60-75 hours per week for the last 6 weeks, and I’m still behind on my work. I feel like it’s reasonable to not kill myself further to fit in more/turn things around faster at this point, but am I being unreasonable? I expect my workload to remain at this level through the end of the year at least.
