Did a layoff lead you to a path you wouldn't have taken otherwise? Whether it be a passion project, learning new hobbies/skills, or pivoting into a new field? I'd love to hear any silver lining you've had.

Yea - hate it. Now I’m in debt

I started doing freelance work, of all random matters. Ended up working for a blog and doing content writing. It was an interesting thing to pick up even though I no longer do it. Currently considering getting an insurance license and going down that route.

That's so cool! It sounds like you've used the time away from a traditional job really effectively.

Yes it actually did and I am really grateful. I was working for the government before covid hit and when it hit, I was laid off. I struggled to find something but now I have a job that I absolutely love and I am very happy. I am glad I ended up where I did.

"Everybody can be a leader" some say... "Leaders are nurtured not born" say others... True.

But... this is also true: "not everybody wants to be a leader" (whether they can or can't be). It is a fairly common practice in organizations with traditional career management structures for people to "be promoted" into leadership roles as the "end steps of the corporate ladder" that was climbed doing technical work. And, unfortunately, this doesn't work all the time

After spending 4 years as a mid-level ops manager, I tried to break into HR through talent acquisition. Now after 6 years in TA, I've had a hard time getting out of it. My goal was always to get into a more broad HRBP position, but I've since worked for smaller orgs without a solid HR career path. When I ask about my career goals, they keep telling me, "Soon!" Or "Maybe in 6 months!"

I'm testing SPHR in June. Any advice for securing the type of role I'm aiming for?

Long time in the making; but we finally sold off from our 50% HWB short. We had two tests at the 3400 level, getting as high as 3420 today before the sell off. Momentum and pessimism over lack of stimulus could take us to the 3107 target quickly, nearly a 10 percent decline over the next month. Stay short my friends. It's going to get bumpy.

Follow up post to my last post…My husband was laid off from the company where I also work. I am feeling really isolated / depressed about working and moving forward. I’m also getting to a stage where I’m really sad that people haven’t reached out to either my husband or myself to send well wishes or provide support. It’s like they don’t know what to say or I make them feel awkward so they don’t bother…I’m trying to focus on a few that have been supportive but it’s hard…Any words of advice? 😞
