Hmm I never thought of it that way. I'm a 5th year and it would annoy me to have constant check ins tbh
I totally understand, I feel if I was more senior I would not be as concerned as those connections would be in place. But coming in as a first year I just feel totally disconnected as I’ve been WFH longer than I was in the office, and to build a future at a firm it seems like having these personal relationships are crucial not only to getting interesting work but partnership prospects too.
I think what most people (including myself) forget is that a lot of the time, both partners and associates have other things going on at home...like homeschooling children and whatnot. And even if they’re not homeschooling, home responsibilities may have changed. I feel for you though, even under normal
circumstances, being a junior can feel isolating.
All that to say, even if you had a standing zoom, I guarantee people would treat it as optional at best
I’m a term law clerk and the same thing happened to me. We went home mid March and maybe had weekly facetimes for an hour and that was it. Little guidance from the career clerk or judge. Basically completely autonomous (except for edits on my orders). And it’s part of the reason I’m leaving early and starting at a firm🤷🏻♀️ it’s not normal for first/second years to have such little guidance and mentorship.
What do you think would help improve your situation? Do you have a mentor (whether formal or informal?)
I think something that tried to emulate the dynamic in the office would have been nice. It wasn’t uncommon to have group lunches (even if it was for CLEs), walk in to another’s office, or even just have a discussion in the kitchen as we were making coffee so I feel that even a five minute call just to say hey would have meant a lot even if we ended up talking about how little we have to do on our weekends. I didn’t necessarily want or need structured time with the entire group (zoom can be difficult to handle in a group setting) but a check in call from someone more senior would have done a lot to help me feel more integrated with the group and that the firm was interested in my development.
I had a more informal mentor who left for maternity leave for most of the pandemic and my formal mentor is in a different practice area and office unfortunately.
