Rising Star
??? You made it to MBB - stick it out if you can. If it doesn’t work out you’ll get some time to pivot.
Congratulations, you are self aware. This is the highest level of intelligence. You’re where you’re at because you have skills and you’re authentic. Don’t go backward. Fight, use your skills, work on communications and assess your comfort level a month from now. Then repeat.
Chief
You went to a T2 firm and they said you weren’t good enough so you showed them up by going to MBB. They can suck it
They may have been right, or not. We’ve all got fair criticism and we’ve all got bs criticism.
OP, congratulations on landing a better job. You’ll make mistakes like everyone, just learn from them and move on.
And don’t ever, ever let the b…stards get you down!!! You’ve got this!!! 💪
You are brand new at an MBB - you have a clean slate so don’t worry about being written off in the previous role
Just be better this time
Just don’t be Mid bro, you got this playa
I got no return offer from my first consulting gig (a tier 2/3) and now I am absolutely thriving. I think a few things to consider:
1) different firms are looking for different things - tier 2/3 may be looking, at a post mba level, for managers that can easily fit into the job (usually those that have done consulting before)
2) these smaller firms don’t have time / space / culture to coach and grow folks at a certain level - they may have seen your development goals and thought they didn’t have the structure to help you improve
3) larger institutions (Ie MBB) know very well how to take folks from all different starting points and help them to become great consultants
You’re well positioned going into MBB that tend to hire more on your potential than current ability to do the job - learn everything you can and see if you like it! Maintain your industry connections and if you decide consulting is not for you, you can surely go back. I’ve heard a few stories of this kind and know it’s possible. Good luck!
You often learn from failures. By the way an internship is an accelerated process so making mistakes can easily ruin your offer. As a new associate you will be given a clean slate but it will definitely be harder at MBB than T2. Good luck, learn quick and you’ll be just fine
Which MBB
STAY. You won’t get fired before at least 16-18months. And then you get to go on transition which is free money for 2-4 months. So that’s almost 2 years of MBB on your resume. Then you can leave to whatever role you feel you’re better suited for, with a super strong resume :)
Round 2 🥊 focus on using the learnings from the T2 to show them up. I had the exact same scenario, going from a boutique with non-existent training to Big 4 where I'm the go to guy for decks and strategic communication now.
If you still aren't finding your groove at MBB you'll have at least a year with the performance improvement plan and all, and can make up a resume justification in terms of leaving to a better opportunity or for better wlb.
Dude why are you so anxious? Don’t let your worries and doubts kill a new good thing you got now. Maybe you need to get your anxiety under control. Learn from your mistakes and move on.
You’ll figure it out
It’s a tough situation to be in.
I hate to say it but fake it till you make it mind set has to be used.
Good luck and you’ll be surprised at how fast you can adapt sometimes.
Rejection is redirection. You’ve got this! Stick it out
Look up “imposter syndrome”. You got where you’re at for a reason. Don’t give up now.
Consulting is an art. It takes time to figure out communication, CYA, the ability to say no, mentorship- giving and receiving, all while providing valuable insights and solutions to clients.
Give it time and continue to play the game. Who knows, maybe you’ll be far more competent than you imagined.
Ty all, this gives me a good feedback to work off of.
