Some companies are not flexible in PTO or other managed benefits. Base, bonus, and equity, and sign on bonuses are what I see.
One of my managers way back in the day at a midsize firm negotiated an increase in PTO upon her promo to SM in lieu of a raise.
Besides that firm, every firm I've worked for in the past 15+ years has offered no flexibility in benefits, at least at sub-SM levels.
The question I often has is which came first: rigid pay structure or lack of imagination for demands?
How did we align that this is the only way we want to be compensated?
I actually did look to negotiate my PTO when joining BCG. Turns out, most forms of compensation are rigid, at least in firms that have standardized pay.
Because that’s what matters. I think lack of imagination came first
As an example of today: what would your salary to remote work trade off be?
