Wow I am sorry to hear that. None of our NP's have been assaulted, I can tell you that much. I can't say the same for the nurses.
If safety is your main motivator, outpatient NP roles are a solid move. An inpatient or psych NP might not make a huge difference, though. Still some risk, just fewer direct care situations.
It’s less of your title and more where you work and who you’re dealing with. If you’re at a public institution or in a big city, I don’t think it matters.
Stay out of psychiatric hospital NP role. Out patient is safer. However, nurses and NP are assaulted every day. Stay out of the ED. Take a self defense class. Develop a 3rd eye. Scanning your work environment. If you are assaulted fight back. And press charges against the individual
Make a stand. Do not back down. It is called courage.
