Do part-time engineering gigs exist for those not 60+? I am in my 30s and will be having my 2nd child this year and love the thought of working 3 days a week while my kiddos are little. My day to day involves a lot of project involvement with pressing timelines so it's hard to imagine a company being okay with design work being completed at a slower pace. Just curious about other options I hadn't previously considered in the engineering space that I can keep an eye out for. Thanks!

I have never seen a part-time engineering position on the open market. I think the roles that exist are created by businesses/managers for very specific individuals. If your manager is approachable and open, I would talk to them to see what kind of arrangement could be made in your current situation. There may be clients who can't pay as quickly or projects that can be done at a slower pace that could benefit both you and the company.

Yeah there are some available if you would consider being a private contractor. My dad works like that because he doesn't need a ton of money anymore.

I think making your own LLC and getting contract work is the best option. But project management is hard to do "part time". You likely will be able to do some weeks on, some weeks off. But not say 10-20 hours a week.

Contract work or working for a company that allows it. Mine will allow you to drop to 3-4 days a week for a few years like in your situation.

When I had younglings, the travel involved with supporting multiple manufacturing sites meant i was away all week (but home on the weekends, thankfully). That wasn't exactly optimal, though. Moved onto some contract/consulting work, which allowed me to be home every night, but when the crunch came, it often involved weekend work and/or late hours to meet progress milestones and deadlines. When you're working 5a-5p, 7 days/wk, 2 hours from home... it's definitely worse. You're physically there, but... you're not. It was definitely lucrative and I think it's why my ex tolerated it for so long. BUT, I think you may find a niche with small companies that have small projects and don't have the on-staff technical capability, especially if you come armed with contractors to execute the same. I do some pro-bono (okay, they feed me chocolate... lots of the most amazing chocolate) work for a local company. It's just a few hours of my time when they call. If I had 10 like them... I'd seriously consider it to be my retirement plan
