Do people in consulting realize that most people in corporate don’t like them? Most consultants, usually from McKinsey, I know have fancy vocabularies and preppy faces, but none of them have any substance. The recent interview with Pete Buttigieg is the epitome of management consultant -style, fancy word salad that says absolutely nothing about the question that was asked. They may think they are big shots with fancy degrees, but all we see is narcissistic, impractical, whiny spoiled brats.

Corporations pay for consulting services. Consultants make a lot of money. So I guess it doesn’t matter if they are liked.

You seem to have personal issues with Pete B

like

Manager doesn't like people that sound smart. He wants salt of the earth people that say what they mean and mean what they say! Except for when, what they really meant was...

Did you get that all off your chest?

I'll spill the tea: even MBB consultants don't like MBB consultants. I have a preppy face so I know what I'm talking about 😤

like

This is so true… the last time I was staffing up a team, about 1/3 of the A/Cs had a massive entitlement problem (skewed toward most of the APCs, or associates promoted to consultants before B school). I’m like bro, you have 2.5 years of experience and have no idea what you’re talking about, shut your mouth.

like

MBB consultants don’t represent us all. I do operations consulting, I work with line managers and P&L owners to address real issues affecting their businesses. I don’t like working with ex-MBB either.

like

What is a preppy face? I want one.

like

MBB consultants are typically quite gifted. It’s not about affinity. It’s about impact and results. Vast majority of MBB and T2 consultants have substantial amount of substance.

like

like

Pete B is a particularly bad example of consulting, but not all consultants are empty suits.

Sometimes you really do need outside experience.

like

Have you heard of this fascist the first X-BCGer, Netanyahu? I was think he beats Pete n that scale.

like

As a former BCGer, no. We lived in a VERY isolated social bubble both online and in-person

like

I am a Former BCGer too.
I notice the arrogance likelihood of an MBBer increases exponentially if consulting is the only work experience they ever had... Since what gets you to Partner is convincingly faking "deep expertise" and producing fancy looking decks without ever having delivered or executed anything end-to-end, there is kind of a self-selection / survivorship bias effect that drives attrition / promotions.
MBBs are selected among the "creme de la creme" insecure overachievers from the elite universities of this world -amongst those you have really nice people and also truly deranged ones. Given the hardships that consulting imposes, who do you think are the ones who are willing to stay? And how do you think that affects the proportion of each end of the nice-deranged spectrum at each level of the hierarchy?

That you dismiss the entire profession for one Pete B is indicative of data insufficiency. Besides, consulting isn’t doing something every stakeholder will welcome

Lol

For McK specifically, a contributing factor (but certainly not the only one) may stem from the type of engagements McK is known for (i.e. top down org right-sizing)

By that I mean:
1. There is no way to be popular when you do that kind of job
2. Doing that kind of job over and over again requires a certain type of personality, so there is some degree of self-selection / survivorship bias through attrition

I am clueless now. My last working day is approaching (In a month). Any Help??

In the current lateral market what is the usual time for hearing a decision after a final round of interviews? For context, final round went really well, it’s not even been a week yet, they thought I was a great fit etc, said they’re expanding and looking to hire someone ASAP. Just wanted to know what others’ experiences have been like.

Had an interview for an associate position at Citi. Interviewee was based in London and I’m in NYC. The only interview time that worked was 6am. I was barely functioning and feel like I truly messed up in my answers because I couldn’t not think clearly. I have another with the head of the division next week again at 6am (pre determined before this interview). It was also hard because the division’s core work is private enough that there was not much prep I could do beforehand. Tips?
