I don’t think you have to be an extrovert to be promoted, but you do need to feel comfortable advocating for yourself which often comes more naturally to extroverts. You generally don’t get what you don’t ask for.
What about public speaking? I think I’m pretty good with advocating for myself.
I’m very much an introvert.
Networking and winning business or advocating for yourself has nothing to do with being introverted/extroverted.
I cannot walk into a conference where I know nobody and walk out with 121 business cards, 7 new best friends, and 3 viable leads.
Even if I could, doesn’t work like that.
I’ve taken time, at this point 17 years in some cases, to cultivate relationships with people who know my work and my ability.
Partners at law firms who were associates on a transaction back in 2007 and now we’re pitching business together. The MD at my old bank who is now a partner at a private credit fund giving me a deal for a company in his portfolio as I’ve given him early access to deals I’m doing.
If you value people and are willing to do right by them without any immediate payoff for yourself, you’ll eventually be rewarded. Doesn’t take the consummate salesman to be successful in this business. No amount of persona or friendliness can make up for bad outcomes.
Thank you MD1! This gives me hope.
