Range. They come in at bottom. You counter at the top. Settles in the middle. Every time.
Single number. When you give a range then be prepared for them to come back with the lowest # in your range. Why would they pay you more if you said you would do the job for X amount? Do your research and just go in with a clear amount and own it! Good luck 👍
Statistically I've read a range gets you higher results. Give a higher range than you'd think though, they will come in on the bottom.
I went in with a range because A) I wasn't quite sure what their range was for the position and didn't want to risk screwing it up by giving too high/low a number, B) to show that I'm flexible and willing to negotiate, C) as a way to get other pieces of compensation (i.e. I'll accept a lower number if it includes signing bonus/relocation assistance/more vacation etc). They offered at the low end, I countered at the high end, and we met in the middle (which was my realistic high end all along)

It depends if I'm making more of a lateral type move I'll throw a range out so I'm not making less than what I currently have . If I'm moving up I'll inflate those number. The bottom number is the least you will take for a move so with a range you will have wiggle room. All these numbers are based on what the typical salary is for the role
If you give a range they'll take the smallest number, so there's not much point. Only give a range if they say your first number doesn't work; they know you'll always accept more money, you don't need to showcase that.
