Should add that I’m applying for non-technical roles, and hoping to focus on a healthcare product, since I’m already in that industry.
Idk how to answer your question but below are insights that might help.
I augment as a product manager or consult/assist. I think it’s a different ballgame when my client’s performance are based on metrics like # users, adoption rates, user feedback, App Store rating, new revenue/cost return, etc. vs. what a strategic client’s performance metrics are...tbh I’m not even sure what that looks like.
While as a consultant I saw an “industry expert” SVP get fired because the project he was hired to guide product-wise shit the bed after launch. 3 years by multiple teams flushed. Bad brand PR. A lot of hype for the launch and then bloggers were all about how the product was a cool idea but a complete failboat. Cyberpunk 2077 style.
Point being. I believe you think about product success totally different when it’s your job on the line vs. product justification / strategic vision of it...your role doesn’t exist just for thought leadership, you’re role exists to manage the product’s success. Your most valuable partner in crime is also your enemy. Your IT project manager won’t give a shit about the product, only about hitting dates and budget.
For a product manager I believe it’s critical to have tons of industry expertise. Else people need to go to someone else for thought leadership and you become a glorified BA. Point of a product manager people come to you for the answers on what to do.
