One of my direct reports has asked about going part time. They currently manage special reports in a bi-weekly publication, working closely with sales, freelance writers, and an internal designer. Job duties are primarily project management and editing/proofreading. As the first read on articles, they need to have an understanding of the material (business/regulation). Ever sit down to grade essays you know will be terrible so you put off grading and then you have to force yourself to read them?

When beginning a piece of literature, I first help the kids access the relevant culture. I have used web quests, but I have found that the kids researching their choice of topics and creating Slides containing information and pics results in more students participating. Recently they researched heraldry for the Medieval Era and reproduced either a family crest that they found or created their own personal crest. Anyone have other activities they use?

Those of you who do First Chapter Fridays or similar read-alouds, do you edit out curse words when you’re reading?

Anyone have any good advice for getting students to think/respond on their own? So many times when I ask them to write their own thoughts about something and to explain why they hold that opinion, many students get stuck and/or turn to the Internet. And then I find myself repeating, I’m asking for YOUR thoughts about this, not someone else’s. I teach grades 9 & 11.

Today, my entire class stated they do not feel comfortable working with the school's instructional coach. How can I, as a teacher, encourage them to open up and receive helpful strategies and help with their homework if they are not comfortable? Any suggestions? I don't have time to assist everyone.
