My husband and I have chosen to be child free. I personally see paternity/maternity leave as more of an accommodation for having children. It serves the purpose of giving new parents time to care for and bond with their new child while also taking care of themselves during a time of transition. I'm not sure being child free warrants any kind of additional time off beyond what's normally offered to the company. I'm curious to hear all the other opinions on this!
No…. Paternity leave is not a sabbatical or vacation.
For the birthing parent, it takes 6-8 weeks before they’re medically cleared to go back to work after giving birth. It takes even longer than that to actually fully heal. It also takes quite a bit longer for parents and babies to adjust to the new child AND studies have shown that having that bonding time is beneficial for both parents and the child - regardless of if the baby is theirs by birth or adoption.
Agreed!
Oh this is going to be an interesting topic
Parental leave is not a sabbatical, and certainly not a vacation. It’s necessary time to care for a brand new infant who requires around the clock attention, often every hour through the night, and allow a new mother to heal both physically and emotionally and bond with their new child. Companies don’t offer it as a “perk” or just to be nice. They realize they need to just to retain employees who would otherwise need to quit or job hop after having a child.
Never thought of parental leave as a retention strategy
No.
Can you expand on your pov?
FMLA isn’t paid leave.
This is so good. What will it be called, though?
PTO for smart people lol 🤭🤭🤭
I'm assuming OP is Canadian.
My partner and I have often discussed this. While mat/pat leave are good benefits to those choosing to conceive, they are also a form of discrimination toward dinks — because we pay into the system yet don't reap any of these benefits.
To even the playing field, a sabbatical would be a fair option, or at the very least, allow people the ability to opt-out of the parental insurance tax plan.
@Product Marketing - so many things. We also have the highest maternal mortality rate of any “developed” nation.
No. You also have to consider those who’ve already had their kids while working elsewhere. Would they also get a “sabbatical” type leave? I think the system as it is works.
Also, if a person that says they would be without children accepts their child-free leave but ends up having a child and needing paternity/maternity leave - how would that work?
This is interesting. I’ve never thought about it. However, maternity/paternity leave and sabbaticals are different. The former is necessary for the mom to recover and allows the father to spend time helping her while allowing both of them to bond with their newborn. Their leave doesn’t last long. Sabbaticals, those are longer.
Perhaps they can help them move overseas to work in one of their international offices? I don’t know, it’s just a thought
