It is a waste of time the same way watching a movie or reading a book is a waste of time. It's entertainment.
Notice that I said “particularly fiction”

I've known too many guys who've let areas of their lives fall apart due to video games. This is not limited to neglecting relationships, school, work, eating, hygiene, sleeping, being late, mood swings, etc. Addiction seems to be more common than people are willing to admit.

I'm just pointing out that games are more addictive than say movies or reading. I've never heard of someone whose relationship fell apart because they couldn't stop reading all day. That's why I don't think the comparison is quite accurate.
I’m not into video games at all. And I use to loooove them as a kid.
That being said - I don’t think its a waste of time. People like what they like - who am I to try and knock their passion for something by saying its a waste of time? There is plenty worse things to be consumed by -

Only three months to Cyberpunk2077’s premiere tho! 🤷🏼♂️
Allegedly...

I know video games ruin relationships/marriages 🧞♂️
Well it sure didn't ruin mine but I wouldn't have married him if he didn't play video games lmao

Almost everything you do, including playing video games, adds to your understanding of the world. It builds out your cultural context. So while you may get more “real-world” benefits from something like working out or attending a get-together, playing video games is still a valuable part of the milieu of life.

Play all you want, just have a varied interest to expand beyond video games ;)
I'm a gamer too, btw. You need to connect on common interests, as that is the fastest way to connect with someone, and ir won't be just video games.

I used to spend a lot of time playing video games growing up and looking back, I wish I spent that time developing more meaningful relationships or skills. It can be a very isolating and stunting hobby. And it isn’t interesting to talk about to anyone that isn’t a gamer.
I still play games now but only big Triple A releases with single player stories (like RDR2, Witcher 3, God of War). I’ll be playing Cyberpunk 2077 but that’s the only game I’ll really spend time on this year
Half half, it’s not all bad because storyingtelling and art can have a lot of wisdom and beauty in it. However, to be a commercial product, there is an addictive element built in and well designed to trick your brain into it. I’d say if you have pretty good self-control, playing game is a good entertainment. If not, stay away from it like I do.
I would say there’s a range that were talking about here. There’s games like candy crush or fortnite that are about adrenaline and repetition. But there’s also a lot of immersive story games that are intense at times that you have to stop playing, like throwing a book at the wall. World building can be a fascinating concept in itself

Do you think work is a waste of time? I think that not, but curious what others’views are. I have heard so many cases of people neglecting everything else and ruined their life due to working so much

Depends. In a lockdown, do you have anywhere to be?
Don't neglect your duties, but do what you want with your free time.

I think it’s like any leisure activity and should be treated as such. Kick back and enjoy your games just like you would a tv show or movie, but I don’t consider them a hobby or healthy activity. They’re designed to be addictive and too much gaming is a real problem.

Depends on the game. Strategy games are engaging as hell. Crap like the Sims are entertaining as hell. Mario cart is fun.
Shooter games I’ll never get. Just don’t understand how someone can spend hours blowing things up and killing people in what, with new tech, looks like an increasingly realistic setting.

I don't think so. Just because you are not solving math probkems doesn't mean you are wasting your time. They can teach problem solving, analysis, strategy, team work, communication, etc.

And even if none of this applies but it helps you de-stress... That is also good

No. Have you all ever been around a child? Play (whether it’s digital or analog) is an integral part of the human learning experience.
I dunno. I do know I spent 1.5 hours trying to find a Paradise Planet in No Man’s Sky last night just so I could build a base on it.

Sounds good... thanks!
Do whatever makes you happy. These last 6 months have been hell for everyone. Whether it’s going on walks, watching Netflix, or playing video games... everyone needs an escape.
Yes, but what is wrong with wasting time?
My wife sure does 😂
Not at all. They’re amazing for diverting thoughts

Which is a temporary pseudo solution to a long term problem.

You could play video games and listen to a podcast or audiobook
Rising Star
Yes.
I tried to play them a few times but I can only play the simple ones. I lack the coordination/reflexes/whatever and those that I can play, I get bored with pretty quickly. But there are other wastes of time like watching movies/trashy TV. But at least with a movie you can be doing other things —knitting, eating dinner, cleaning, ironing clothes, cuddling.
I wouldn’t agree that reading in the same waste of time. You need to use your imagination, think, etc. For non-fiction, you are learning things. But how useful is it to know about the last years of the Romanov dynasty, or Revolutionary War military strategy?
