2021 was my first year freelance. Live in Massachusetts and just learned they don’t allow solo 401k deductions on state income tax for freelancers. That is a pretty big hit for me. I thought they’d be more friendly to small biz. Also they’re taxing the Cobra subsidy. I mean I’m all for taxes and no way, I’m not moving to NH but this detail just kinda stung. Can't decide if this thinking is crazy or smart:
Staying in consulting for another 1-1.5 years for good maternity healthcare benefits and smoother pathway to ramp off and back on work, with opportunity to extend leave further with limited professional risk (e.g., in corporate a backfill might become your permanent fill). Worried that this A.) could result in staying much longer than planned B.) would still ultimately result in crazy consulting hours and C.) wouldn't go as smoothly as idealized
