People inflate their titles on LinkedIn. Essentially creating the reality they would like to see. Don’t be fooled and don’t let it make you feel behind either.
Are they straight up lying on their resumes? Yes. I don’t and I’m pretty sure that’s why I have a hard time getting interviews.

Titles are easy to dangle instead of paying someone a higher salary. I see plenty of people with not enough experience in RVP / VP of Sales roles. I've also worked in companies that are strict with titles but pay extremely well.
I'd always pick money over title. Idgaf what people think I am, I know what I make and whats in my bank account and thats all that matters.
100% I couldn’t agree more! I’ve been in Marketing for 5 years and I’m still an executive, but I see many people becoming Marketing Managers for the same level experience. It makes me wonder the same thing. The company I work for recently went into Liquidation so now I’m wondering which roles I apply to with my experience level. It’s rather confusing!
Try working for over 20 years and feeling behind. 😩

I can't say I'm happy with my career trajectory. I do feel behind, especially after finding out my company allows people to basically create their own job titles. That makes things feel even more superficial.
All sorts of inflated titles.. Directors that are really just managers, VPs that are really directors, SVPs that are really senior Directors, EVPs that are really just VPs.
Lot of egos and fancy titles in this world.
I think it depends on the industry and firm. For instance where I work now, nearly anyone who is a manager is an AVP, all senior managers are VP and SVP’s but a director is actually the head of an entire department. That title is a much bigger thing and actually indicates something. The VP thing is nothing.
Depends on company, industry, field, and experience. My agency and vendor counterparts are SVP and EVP. Some of my peers are Director/Sr. Director. I’ve got 25 years experience and don’t care what my title is as long as you pay me well.
Know your worth, follow the money not the title. You know what you’re capable of regardless of title. If you stay somewhere long enough, ask for the right title. But make sure you start any job with the right compensation, that way you feel valued and it makes all other concerns seem less important. Don’t forget to ask about bonuses too.
Also, just because someone has a big title it doesn’t mean they’re compensated for that title. I’ve seen director roles posted paying less than a senior PM role, so title doesn’t also reflect what you think it might.
Those that follow titles are there for their ego, not for value add to the team. That’s been my experience.
I'm the CEO of 5 companies on LinkedIn.

It also depends on industry, in finance even the admins are VP’s.
100%!!! I've been at it in one form or a other since 2004, and still! Not only that, the job requirements are off the f/n charts! There is no way one person can know everything on some of these job descriptions. Besides, it's all about who you know.
My roles have varied, and I really think it depends on how the company views the role itself. I've been in marketing for 9 years and have had the titles of Marketing Associate, Marketing Manager, Marketing Director, and Communications Director.
I don't think you're behind. I think that unless you're the CMO or Head of Marketing, the roles tend to be the same. I do wish companies would differentiate. Marketing Associate doesn't quite hold as much weight when applying for jobs, but after that, they all tend to be the same
100%l could, tagteen more been in marketing for 5 year and I,m still an executive
Marketing is a rare industry where job titles can mean anything and it makes things really tough for any non marketer.
A 3 person company can have a marketing manager with 1 year experience or you could be at a global company and need to manage a team with 5yrs experience with the same title.
This has been influenced by companies becoming more global and the cultural expectations/ understanding. I.e. I started my career as a marketing exec but when we were bought by a US company that title har to change because their most senior marking person was a marketing executive.
As long as you are happy with the responsibility you have, the comp and that you are still learning job titles don’t really matter.
Yes! I feel like you just described me! My last role hired me with the expectation of promoting me to a director title after 2 years. I exceeded my goals, and my manager then said the rules changed. I played along and exceeded goals for a third year, and then got dinged because of burnout. Nearly 4 years wasted there.
I think it means in start ups is you will be the only one in the marketing dept.
What I find odd is there are no mid or entry level positions listed that don’t ask for a ridiculous amount of experience. Even internships are looking for 5 years experience.
Depends where you are based - I have seen a lot of difference in titles between Europe and the US. My local Parent Teacher Association have all given themselves VP titles, when they are the only person doing something and control a $500 budget.
That doesn't exactly align with me managing a team of 15 and $100M of marketing spend!
Yes. I did sit on the sidelines for a couple of years when my babies were small. I still held PT jobs with good titles (director of marketing for example), yer I see much less experienced people than me making more with better titles. I’ve started researching and working on my executive presence because I don’t know what else to do.
