How can you possibly need more than $79 per diem that’s like $40 for dinner, $25 for lunch, $14 for breakfast and it’s not enough? Plus not having to spend own money on groceries you’d otherwise be buying.
Thanks BCG. It really does add up very quick bc it’s not like you can easily grocery shop and cook for yourself. I try to each at Chipotle every day since it’s cheap. But my god if you go to dinner with your analysts it can easily cost you your entire per diem…

Don’t use meal delivery services

Pre-covid I picked my hotels based on the immediate food options. I get that $75 is not a lot, but given your firm will likely not increase that amount the only way to stretch that is by eliminating meal delivery fees. If a $15 meal ends up being $30 after fees, it’s not the per diem’s fault.
My firm gives us $250 a day, and it’s nice to not need to think about what I’m ordering.
What firm?
So it's covering breakfast and dinner whatcha am missing?

$79 should be doable for sure. Travel day is tough with airport but could get by. As SA1 implies, lunch is on you whether in the office or traveling. Get a $10-15 breakfast and that leaves 60-65 for dinner.

Why would lunch be on you when you’re traveling? At home I can make a sandwich, if I’m traveling I’m by default spending at a minimum 3-4x per day just on lunch.
Had $125/day at my old firm and never felt that I got close. Even with happy hours and drinks and coffees never got much over ~80
Our expense policy wasn’t built for junior talent as only directors and up were meant to have significant travel (FS industry strategy role)

We just don’t really have per diem, you just charge stuff to your card. If you go +$100 per person per meal it’s a (small) issue but that’s really it

From the wording, in the OP, it’s likely they work in Deloitte GPS. Those in Deloitte GPS have per diem for government contract compliance; commercials is reasonable actuals.
The hotel I stay in DC had free breakfast and a free dinner a few days a week, leaves me to just pay for lunch, and usually I’ll just bring loaf of bread and some peanut butter, make a couple sandwiches and bam - pocket 100% of the per diem

On one hand, per diems are annoying - you should just charge actual expenses.
On the other hand, it sounds like you’re bummed out you’re not profiting from per diems.
Which I guess is why per diems are used at some firms in the first place - prevent abusing the system.
Child care and pet care are expensive so travelling is pretty expensive
