Does anyone else randomly wonder what the practice of law was like before the internet. I sometimes imagine the amount of physical documents that had to be exchanged, having to go through it all without the use of “control f”, and mailing actual letters back and forth to schedule a simple meet and confer. When lawyers started to utilize the internet were there CLEs on the dangers of using the internet like we now have with the use of AI?

Yes, but I can imagine expectations were lower, it was okay to move slower because clients weren’t dropping a fortune for every hour of work, and with adhd, there weren’t the same tech distractions and need to respond within one minute to every incoming email.

like

I think though the expectations- like you said- are really what is different. I mean, in the late 1900s we would walk over to someone’s office to chat about a case. So, humans always find a way to pester each other but we didn’t expect the immediate response or constant availability?

So true!!! Imagine every time you want to file something, you have to take it down to the courthouse physically. And like you said, meet and confers and simply coordinating hearings.

I can only imagine the excitement once online filing was implemented and all the changes that came with it - increased case load potential, etc.

Some of these boomer lawyers lived through those times and are now in the day and age where we do trials over Zoom!

The forever-evolving practice of law ✨

I think about this all the time. The internet and technology has taken away so much of the time that was billable but didn’t require full brain engagement.

like

Also, so much harder to research caselaw I’m sure. And coordinate internally within your firm. And of course no work from home. Thank the lord we live in the modern era.

Yes. As someone who practiced law before the internet, before Lexis, you had to shepherdize cases through the books by cross-references and through weekly and daily paper updates.

New midlevel associate at a big law firm and still ramping up. I’m having a lot of trouble tackling small or discrete tasks that are either administrative in nature or otherwise because I don’t have a full plate and something to focus on. I feel bad stopping in the middle of the day and doing something else (e.g. watching tv)since I’m already not billing many hours, but my brain feels all over the place and think that may be the only solution. Anyone have exp. with this or advice?

What are your strategies for completing work efficiently? How do you figure out how long projects should take? A consistent piece of feedback on my yearly reviews has been that I over-bill & spend too much time on assignments. It’s something I actively work on, but I still have no concrete sense of how long I should spend on basic tasks (e.g., drafting a motion to dismiss). My firm is right to expect that I manage my time better as a mid-level associate. WFH has made my time management worse.

One of the things that my ADD coach helped me with was realizing that I wasn’t prioritizing activities that help me feel recharged. Between work and home responsibilities, I was just burnt out and overwhelmed.

So now when I start to get burned out I focus on reducing auditory overwhelm, getting outside, listen to music, get comfortable, read a fun book, etc.

As we’re heading into the weekend, what are some things you do to recharge and give yourself a break?
