I started out at a 40 person RE investment fund and loved the opportunities early on in my career to be exposed to so many things - finance, analytics, capital markets, strategy, valuations, IR, compliance, etc which made me more marketable later on because I had so much more experience than peers my age for higher level positions. It also gave me face time and visibility with all of senior management and I was able to work with and learn directly from them vs from a manager two or three levels down. The downside can be that you most likely will work more hours because there are less people to split the work with and everyone knows everyone so if you don’t hit it off with a team member they can be hard to avoid and everyone else will know about it. You also may not have as great of benefits but your total comp may be higher because there aren’t 20 other associates all making between $x-y that you have to be in range with because you all have the same title. High performers can really shine in a small setting and you can create your own path more easily.
I’ve worked at a big company and hated it since they treated you like a number and it had a very competitive culture. I’ve been working at a smaller company for 3 years now and have loved it. Everyones friendly and always willing to help and the environment isn’t as competitive.
I work(ed) at a smaller firm and now am transitioning to JPM. I wasn’t a fan of the smaller side. There wasn’t much room for growth or promotion but was rather redundant. I genuinely feel like a bigger firm is my preference. There are lots of growing pains in a smaller office and emerging company
