My favorites are Fortaleza, El Tesoro, Tapatio, Tears of Llorona and Fuenteseca.

I mean Tequila is nice too. But why not Scotch?
I love scotch too!

Añejo is my jam. A little lime, a little ice on a hot sunny day is a vibe.

Had no idea! That’s wild! I’ll have to do some research on trying some of the pure stuff. Tbh, I’m a primary bourbon sipper but I got into Añejo because I thought margs were way too sweet, but it’s so damn refreshing on a hot day.
Yess. artenom 1147 is my first recommendation; if you want something unique, tears of llorena is aged in former scotch casks but it’s pricy. Go down the additive free tequila list here as a starting point https://www.tequilamatchmaker.com/tequilas?q=&hPP=30&idx=BaseProduct&p=0&fR%5Bother%5D%5B0%5D=No%20additives
Side note… I’ve observed that El Jimador is relatively top-shelf in the US. I’m in Mexico City at the moment, where the same is considered “well”. After tasting, I agree. #marketing
I like a nice blanco tequila for the most part. I appreciate the aged products, but I like the brightness of a good blanco.
Similar with Patron. It’s popularity is all marketing.
I’m a fan of Illegal as my go-to sipper. Lots of interesting stuff going on in this space if you like exploring.

OP - look up Lalo. Really good blanco tequila, can easily be sipped neat.
Price is $44.99 at Total Wine in CA. Probably going to run you $50-$55 max at other places.
Lalo is a really good one that I forget about.
The story I heard was that when Don Julio was sold, the old man and his son were bound by contract to not produce anymore tequila that would be in competition with the Don Julio brand.
So the grandson opened his own distillery.
I think Lalo will take off once they have stock old enough to put out anejos and reposados
Also, on the tequila tip. You’ll think I am full of shit unless you’ve had it. Jose Cuervo Familia Reserva. Better than many I have tried at 5x the price.
Monochromatic flavor profile?? Seems like you aren't buying the right stuff (or haven't been tasting).
Problem is I've had it all my friend. Bourbon is just kinda boring anymore. Caramel, vanilla, oak... yeah, I get it. What else you got?
When Scotch prices started shooting up in oughties and teens, I started looking for cheaper alternatives. Aged rums are very affordable by comparison and could fit my sweet cravings of the more desert finished Scotches. Ports, Sherry’s and Cognacs are great for the same too. And some of the Mezcals really hit that smokey medicinal flavor of the Islays. And for the straight up the middle vanilla and caramel… that’s when I started getting into bourbon.
I’ve found espolon anejo x to be very satisfying. I’m not a tequila drinker but that’s my “buy it if you see it” bottle.
For everyday and margs I like Corralejo
I love Two Fingers when it comes to tequila.
