Until this summer I was heavily involved in our overall risk management program on top of the usual ISA stuff since IS reported to that dept instead of IT. With folks leaving we had another reorg that undid the reorg moving us to Risk MGMT.
Risk / Compliance is a good pivot if you want to avoid overall technical stuff.
Business partnering or something versions of a security architect. Being the conduit between the business and the security function. It's not technical in the sense of "hands on", such as blue/red teaming, creating firewall rules, etc. but you would need the theory of technical (where, when, why and how, rather than the do). Imagine implementing the theory of CISSP with the business/finance acumen needed to help the business
CSS1 nailed it. These roles are more common in large matrixed companies with multiple business units or divisions.
It’s less of technical position and more integrating cyber services with business and functional partners, understanding the strategic growth drivers of your business, and balancing those imperatives with cybersecurity strategy.
Throw in crisis management and there is never a dull moment 😂
Yes. I feel like I work just as hard as our consultants only my stakeholders are the C-Suite! I brief decks for our CEO and support our head of the cyber practice and a few of their SVPs. I help craft the firm strategy and get to be a part of product development, all the way from ideation. I have the pulse of the org and get to build relationships / my network across the firm.
I absolutely love it
Alternate between CoS, head of Special Projects, or Program / product / Service Management, Cyber Strategy business leadership
Our AVP focuses more on strategy, vision, big picture. He sets our yearly goals, budget allocation. I wouldn’t say it’s non technical, just high level. He understands the technical details. It’s a notch down from CIO in a Fortune 500. About 3 levels up from manager.
The $ is with sales. Personally, I didn't enjoy strategy but lots of people didn't seem to like it. The recruiters all seem to have fun at conferences, but I guess that's their job.
Yea I just don't like sales, really sleezy imo. Seems like it's pretty limited from a strategy perspective too given that a lot is done within the teams rather than having a dedicated function to support the overall effort
I am in IAM. Not that technical.
Why restrict yourself to cyber in such a scenario?
I'm certainly open to other things but have been embedded with cyber for some time now. Unfortunately no one seems to value experience supporting a cyber organization despite it being one of the most demanding across tech. Whats wrong with people?
