I think it certainly makes it more difficult for them to lay you off once you've filed. It's more of a risk to lay you off after you've filed. I would do so immediately if your practice is doing poorly.

No not in advance. Only once baby arrived and leave starts does it protect you some while you are gone from losing job. And even then you would need to lawyer up to fight it. This exact thing happened to a consulting friend. He won but after significant lawyer involvement and cost
It doesn't offer protection, but could offer recourse. It's illegal to descriminate based on family planning, so you could file for wrongful dismissal if it happens.
