E filed a return, got the acceptance, had a $14k payment with the return which was posted by the IRS but they have no record of a tax return and are saying the $14k payment is a credit available to refund. Any ideas how that's possible?

Individual return? MFJ? Was the TP & SP listed differently? I have had clients reverse the order of TP and SP, where one was listed 1st in PY and then switched. That usually results in the return and payment being processed, but they cannot find the return and try to refund the payment.

Single return

When you say the IRS has no record of the tax return, is it possible the return hasn’t been processed? Is an individual?

like

If the IRS were to calculate the return based on the information they should already have in their system, based on the wage and income transcript, the taxpayer would owe a ton more than $14k because of no cost basis tax sales. I reported the cost basis correctly on 8949 and Schedule D

Same EIN for return and payment?

Single return, payment was initiated via the tax return so it's not like the return would go to la la land and the payment goes to the IRS. I use Drake. Called them and they said everything on their end is showing the return was filed and accepted. Even said I shouldn't be able to transmit the return again since the IRS issued the acceptance.

If for an individual I have seen this happen when the return is pulled from the system for identity verification.

Wouldn't there be a record of that letter in their account?

Maybe you should try calling…oh wait even if you do they just put you on hold and eventually hang up on you. Such a professional organization.

Nevermind!

I’m look to enter another area of Finance at this point instead of starting over somewhere else from scratch, but not sure what direction to go. Interested in Investment Banking or M&A.

Would love any advice on how to break into a new industry!

It’s been more than 10 days and multiple follow ups but still no response. I don’t think I was rude while talking to the HR, I just told my current salary and asked for min. that no. Intl Tax folks, how long did it take before you were confident in your role? I've worked for the past 3 years in a practice that is heavily consulting based (inbound and outbound structuring) and I feel like I'm only just starting to understand the foundational concepts (where I can explain them clearly to clients) and offering a shred of value. Then I'll have calls where partners discuss complex tax, legal, treasury and other related concepts that all go over my head.. it becomes overwhelming

Do you all see a compelling future in your tax career? I’ll go first, I don’t see a compelling future working for a large PA firm in the long run because you have to work more as you move up. However, I do see a compelling future by using my knowledge and skills to open my own firm/business and work less hours as long as I make enough money which is $75k, or if I do work long hours, it’s because I want to.

Working for a senior who is beyond horrible. She talks to you like you’re stupid and makes it sound like you’re absolutely terrible at what you’re doing. She’s made 5 other associates cry during her 5 year career. Got someone fired and made another person quit. It’s known around the office that she can no longer have a female associate, because she talks down to females more than she does males. I came along and thought I could deal with it but she literally makes me want to not log on tomorrow.
