Muqtadar Ahmed is a living legend.
We love you Muqtadar ❤️
May Allah SWT reward you and bless you and your beautiful family.
You’re far too kind! May Allah help me live up to the expectations everyone in my life has for me. And if you’re in Chicago, dm me iA. We can meet up with the Chicago community.
Bowl Leader
Popping in to thank you for doing this, Muqtadar!! So happy to have you. Can we have you be the official Partner 1 of this bowl? And toughest question of all - chai or coffee?
It is amazing that we have no connections in common then. Lol.
Did you ever get any pushback from leadership when starting your community? What are some things to be mindful of?
Not really pushback but neither did we get full backing. When we asked for this about 5 years ago, the direction we got back to join the Asian community. But things change.
The goal I would focus on is how to show momentum and all the good that you are doing to help our people. Helping our people is helping the firm be successful.
In terms of what to be mindful of, the biggest thing is to make sure you orchestrate and sufficiently plan our all official discussions. You need to make sure you leave a strong impression in every touchpoint you have. So, treat it as a client meeting.

Moving up the ladder seems to be a function of who you know, and that seems to be a function of partaking in activities that aren’t halal. How do you navigate this?
It shouldn’t hurt your chances iA.
And I have just spotted Mormons because they would also not be drinking!
Is it okay to invite allies to the community? I have mixed thoughts about this...
I would keep the tent as wide as you can. The goal is for people to have a safe space.
We focused on those that identify or ally with Muslims. No more conditions beyond that.
To build a community, we need to focus on commonalities vs. differences.
Interesting story - one of the most inspirational thing for me has been our allies that have done the #EYFastingChallenge and fasted with us, and shared their reflections.

Concerned about ethics in consulting. It mostly seems like we provide bandaid solutions that are disconnected from reality and more focused on keeping a client’s business rather than telling them something they don’t like to hear. It’s been eating away at my conscience. Any advice?
I am sorry to hear this has been your experience. I would find others things to work on, and people to work with, that you can respect iA.
I personally have had situations where we told clients they don’t need us for some work and can do it more efficiently in an alternate way. Those moments are instrumental to building your brand, showing integrity and establishing life long relationships.
It is easy to get jaded with experiences like that, but keep exploring. Have to chat more 1:1 if you like
I will be soon interviewing with EY UK and so really nervous. Any tips on how to crack down the ice and ace the interview? (This is for a role in People and Change practice)
I will send you a DM tomorrow IA and ty for your piece of advice
I’m not even sure how large/small the Muslim community is at my organization - how do I go about starting this process? We do not have a Muslim group yet, but I have noticed a prayer rug in the quiet room!
This is a great question!
Do you know how large your company’s US presence is? As a rough estimate, I would expect 1% of them to identify as Muslims. Use that as an ambitious goal.
Then, as I mentioned above, find two to three people that are as dedicated as you to build the community and start with something small - and do it well and consistently. We started with a newsletter.
With the right intention and sincere effort, iA you will be successful!

Another climbing the ladder question - there’s a clear bias towards extroverts for senior roles, HBR study said 98% of executives are such. I’m very introverted and not sure how to go about moving up. I’m not hesitant to reach out and talk to people, even senior folks, but I suppose it’s that “executive presence” that introverts lack which hinders progress. How do we solve for this problem?
…and executive presence can be taught. So don’t take that as something others have innately
Do you find it challenging to handle being a partner and managing business community with a family?
Yeah it is def challenging. But things worth achieving and doing are often not easy.
IA the journey here is its own reward!
Was it difficult to find support? I find it hard to sustain a workplace group after some time...
Do you mean for the Muslim community at EY? IA we have a structure and will work through volunteer rotation in different roles to keep things new for them.
Now that we have a large enough community, we are also doing new programs that keep it interesting for everyone.
Let me know if this addresses your question.
I know this is closed but I will take my shot.
As someone prepping for Partner role at a Big4, I have realized that I have not tapped the Muslim community for build my network. Would it be disingenuous to do that looking at them as prospective clients? I believe my only gap is C-suite relationships.
Sorry I had missed this but you are likely to connect better with others that are similar to you. So of course, go out and connect with them… and if they happen to be senior leaders at other firms, all the better. I have been exploring how to better connect Muslim ERGs to similar ERGs at our clients for exactly this purpose. No shame in networking and seeking mentors that you can connect with
