Hi guys, Now VMware is offering me a 35% percent hike of what I am earning at DellEmc. I just completed one year at DellEmc. Total 2.7YOE But I don't like to go out of Dell, due to some personal commitments I am planning to switch.
Is it a good time to switch?
Can I talk with my manager ?
Are they able to hike the salary of what VMware is offering? Please suggest me.

Just use sick days
SM1 - almost everyone is off during those Xmas holidas and people who are not have the least productive working days. Most the firm has furlough during that time as well. On top if that you getting add'l day off too. So learn to cooperate, Instead of complaining.
Supposedly (at least in my group) you need partner approval to charge any hours during the break
The reason they went to this is because people were not taking vacation during Christmas just because they knew they wouldn’t have to work anyway. Now they’re forcing it.
I am not sure what the big deal is. I believe PWC and KPMG did something like this and I heard several people complaining why we did not have that benefit. Now that we have it, there are people complaining. I do not necessarily agree with the notion of the firm telling us when to use our time off but they gave us 3 or 4 extra holidays off so I think it is a fair request for us to take a couple of vacation days to line up with their holidays. The firm presented this new benefit making is sound much better than what actually is, I am still happy with the extra time off. IMHO, I believe we should be thankful that the firm is trying to give us some additional time off. This is my opinion and is not intended to offend anyone who thinks otherwise.
I don’t think it’s fair to make y’all use PTO. If they want the office to shut down, they should make those days holidays and not come from your PTO bank. Mandatory PTO usage isn’t right.
OP, since you have 3 weeks year round, you're probably a staff. I agree just as seniors got increased vacation days, staff should have gotten more days as well.
However, I think the winter and summer breaks are win win situations because we're getting more paid holidays than ever before. As for the mandatory 2 days PTO, remember you can use your 3 personal days, 10 sick days, 15 PTO days, and/or wbls time especially that we have a couple of mercury wbls to be done before end of year. Hope this helps!
@EY14: where are you getting 2.5 more weeks of vacation than before? It's literally 3. We get 13 days of vacation total in FY19. I hate when people count weekends as extra time off because that time is supposed to be off. Check things out before you call someone stupid.
Come to KPMG we get 5 weeks off
In 2018, EY gave us the week of July 4th off completely. No strings attached. The people I know loved it.
Later in the year they announce that we'd also get Christmas / New Years 2018 and July 4th 2019 but only partially and we'd have to use vacation to supplement it. Everyone I know is pissed.
Moral of the story: If you're gonna do something nice, just do it. Don't be cheap about it.
“Just because we get a lot of vacation compared with the rest of the American workforce doesn’t mean it’s a lot.”
Actually, that’s exactly what it means, it’s a lot compared to the rest of America. We get more than most every other industry and we are still complaining. I worked for 15 years prior to PA and the standard is two weeks vacation.
The reason why I mentioned sick days, and thanks for calling me unethical by the way, is because prior to this year there wasn’t a standard. I usually took around three days and suffered the other days. Knowing we have 10 days takes so much pressure off and allows us to take care of ourselves better. I didn’t call them extra vacation days like you implied. They are sick days and I don’t take them all. But we have them, which is incredible.
^sounfd like you're definitely drinking the koolaid they're feeding. Never sounds good to me either lol.
The policy is great, but only if your entire team takes off. During the 4th of July week that we had off, both my senior manager and manager were emailing like crazy to get stuff done immediately for their own personal reasons (one was going on paternity leave and the other was taking vacation later in the month). To me that’s fine if they want to work during the holiday but only if it affects them and no one else. It’s currently on our team calendar that we’re all taking the 11 consecutive days in December but they’re already talking about all the things that need to get done before January 1st which realistically means that they will not get done before the 21st and people will work during that week.
I’m personally ok with taking the PTO if people actually respect it and don’t expect you to work anyways because “that’s just how things work around here."
We get a week of holiday between Christmas and New Years for year end closure. Never made to take PTO for firm closures/holidays
We have to use either 2 vacation days or both of our floating holidays for our Christmas break. I don’t remember what happened when they gave us the whole week off for July 4 this year (usually we just get 2 extra holiday days to make it a long weekend) but I think we had to use 1 vacation day or floating holiday. If you really want to save up some vac time, why not do some self-studies or get a head start on admin work for the next year over the break?
We have something called soft close where we are expected to take CTO between Christmas and New Years unless our clients specifically request we work. I personally enjoy having a full week off work. But some don’t like using time off for “soft close”
If you have chargeable work that will completely fill your days, they’re not gonna say jack shit to you. But you better not hit any unassigned, authorized project, or nonchargeable code
Staff aren't getting extra days like seniors
GT calls those days GT holiday and we do not use any of our personal time off. Thanksgiving it’s a GT holiday, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day are GT holidays among all the other celebrated Holidays in the year.
Wait, EY only gets 3 weeks?
@KPMG 3 yes, they just bumped senior up to 4 weeks. I believe that put them on par with the managers and I am unsure what senior managers get
