Sorry, I didn’t go to graduate school, but I also have a degree in genetics and biotechnology would you say research assistant is a good career path?
Research Assistant (RA) is pretty much an entry level job into clinical research. Most specifically, after a couple months to 1 year of RA experience then you can become a Clinical Research Coordinator (CRC). If your goal is to be a CRC then RA is perfect to start as. If your goal is to be a CRA or work in industry with companies like Pfizer or Iqvia, then being an RA at a site is still good too because you're building up your years/experience in clinical research that is usually required for industry jobs. Being a research assistant is not a "career path" itself, but instead consider it as way to get your foot in the door.
Once you have a couple years of experience as a CRC you can either continue, or there are lots of different roles within clinical research you can do that require those years of experience. I'm still VERY new to this path so I don't know how well I can answer your question.....but so far I'm glad I chose to start out my healthcare career as an RA to get into clinical research. I'm pretty confident about my future because there's so many options of what I can do with my experience.
I’m an aspiring clinical research assistant and wanted to know your steps in branching into the field. For context I’m in Canada and did my undergrad in biomedical science
I'm not sure I know exactly what your asking, can you reword maybe?
By "field", if you are referring to the overall clinical research field, then my "steps" into branching in it would be with my current job as a research assistant.
If you're asking how I got my job as an RA, well I went to the careers page of all the major hospital and universities in my area and searched for any clinical research postings and applied to any of the entry level roles. So say like for New York, I'd look up if Mount Sinai or NYU was hiring for anything clinical research that I could potentially qualify for.
