For my job, I had to take the fmla/short term disability leave as soon as baby was born (6-8 weeks). Then I could use up my vacation before the parental bonding benefit or I could use it after.
Same here. Because I was due in October and had 4 weeks of vacation I didn’t want to go to waste, I first took short term disability (8 weeks for a c-section), then 4 weeks vacation (which was a little bit more since the end of year company holidays overrode vacation but would not have overridden leave), then 6 weeks of maternity/bonding leave, which got me well into February.
I miss that time so much. Savor it!
Maternity leave as a broad term is usually broken up into 6-8 weeks of short term disability and then X amount of weeks of parental boning leave. Because short term disability is a medical leave for the recovery of birth, you cannot delay that, it has to start directly after the birth of your baby. Then parental bonding kicks in after that.
PTO can be used in the weeks before birth or after parental bonding leave has ended
Probably not because you usually have to provide your company's benefits/HR department with a birth certificate, and your leave benefits don't typically officially start until you give birth. So basically yes, you can your PTO leading up to birth and/or after your mat leave officially ends
Yeah it depends on how your leave is paid. It is usually easier to use vacation at the end of your leave rather than the beginning. I added two weeks of PTO and two weeks unpaid to the back of my leave.
