Fishes, happy new year! Targeting to go back to India in 5 years - figuring out what needs to be done professionally and financially. Professionally, I can stay on course and become partner but don't know what exit options in India would be like. Probably not even worth going through the grind now. So thinking of moving to industry although I like consulting. Thoughts? Financially, already have 2 cr worth assets in India and planning to have 5 cr more by the time I leave. Thoughts?

Why 5 years? If you want to make partner, transfer to EY india and you can invest those 5 years there. Or invest those 5 years in any career. India is a very competitive market, you’re not going to seamlessly get your desired position based on US experience.

Regardless of the money, it is a life restart if you switch to any country. If you really want to do it, do it sooner. You will have a lot more variables 5 years down the line.

Professionally - before the US I worked for a smaller consulting firm. Kept in touch with the MD through all the years so eventually when the day came to go back - I didn’t even have to think twice about my job when I landed. Walked into the office with a good role in hand :) m or SM is the best position to move but ensure that you have hands on skills . People management in India isn’t the differentiator. Whatever you’re good at - sales, marketing, product dev, etc make sure you can run the show end to end, hire the right team , etc. especially at a growth firm. Start networking right now with target firm MDs. Normal interviews in India are very difficult to crack - avoid them.
Financially - save 80% of your income, sell all assets one year before actually leaving the country, invest in ETFs and I moved all my money in chunks 3 years before the move. Also bought an apartment in India and ensured that I got all the work I needed done before I moved in.

Fishes, appreciate replies thus far but can you all actually guide me instead of questioning the will and grit to go back 5 years down the road. Maybe a lot of people did not move back but the ones who did, how did they plan is what i am trying to get to. Thanks

Following, i am planning to move back in May 2025. Countdown has begun...

like

Yeah SM. Can you also share some perspective on how you are thinking professionally 5 years from now? Where would you like to be ... partner or something else?

OP, I moved back. DM me if you want

like

I don’t have definite timeline to go back but I need to go back at some point to take care of parents.

My plan is to reach director level in my current firm with an executive mba from top school so that I will make my profile more global, standardized and strategic rather than playing tactical roles.
Then move into industry or tech firms (any start up to google/Amazon). Then move back to India as Regional head or leader (in whatever form that comes up may be VP, Sr. Director whatever it is).

If I continue in consulting then I will network within the member firms and make a move.

Financially, my goals are like leave $100K in ETFs in addition to 401K plan and let it grow in US market. I already have bought 2 houses/real estate back in India along with some emergency funds for myself and for parents. I will probably increase them by certain more given that my future indian salary won’t give enough cushion to save more for all my dependents.

like

Thanks SM. Yeah based on the responses to this post, that's what I am thinking. Not sure EY transfers partners to India and I am leaning towards moving to industry although I like consulting. Thats the trade off I guess for long term

I have seen such posts. They never move.

Thanks. I'd like to go back and either work with a growth startup (pref) or corporate. Will be 35 then and like to think I'd have in more to keep my career going. Trying to figure out what should be my career goals in the US to have those exit options in India in 5 years

Are you married?

Dude, I have seen so many say it, but soon you are so knee deep, it is impossible to move voluntarily

We are in the same boat Op. A few things I can add to the list of things you want to consider before moving back - funded 529 for kids, $300k in 401k, a home/apartment in India, 2 pieces of real estate anywhere (for rainy days)

Professionally, I’m targeting moving to a FAANG company in India. The packages are pretty good from what I hear

like

OP, move now (as soon as the baby is born) or never. I wouldn’t uproot my kids when they are already in school and used to American lifestyle

Ditto, transfer them in grade 1.

If a firm has multiple openings that you’re interested in, is it a good or bad idea to apply to more than one position? I’m a third year interested in retooling from lit to general corp, but they prefer someone with 3+ years of corporate experience. They’re also looking for an M&A with 1+ years, so it may be easier to aim for that, but I’ve heard horror stories re WLB for M&A. Would still try it out tho bc I’m desperate to leave lit, but don’t want to make a faux pas. Any insights appreciated!

Hi Team,

I joined Mindtree on 8th Feb and not got project and I was waiting for last 2 and half month. So, i gave interview outside (tech mahindra) and got selected. Almost 30-35% they said they will give and i am negotiating on it.

My main concern was shift and i have some health issues and unable to continue in night shift in Mindtree and tech mahindra its purely EMEA shift and per project team update.

Shall i switch to tech Mahindra?
