Follow up on BCG performance thread: I really like our system, but don't have any decent comparisons. How do other firms track/rank performance to determine promotion/bonus pay?

I'd give you an answer but honestly no one really knows at Accenture 😂

At Bain, we have 5 possible ratings. 80% of people get the middle rating and are paid the target bonus. 10% or so of people get lower than that rating and a lower bonus. They are either put on performance review or managed out. 9% or so of people get the second highest rating and a 50% higher bonus. 1% of people get the highest rating and 2x standard bonuses. Percentiles are not fixed, but that's how it usually shakes out.

like

I used to work at Goldman and their system was somewhat similar to what you are describing BCG. Accenture did that but is moving away from it to more of an individual priority measurement system. So people above you vouch for your promotion and think you are ready. Given the company is so big ranking people at project, then account then functional/industry alignment was almost a 6 month exercise. There is still a comparative element but more watered down.

like

it's determined my a mysterious group of people and is based on if you have kissed their ass

like

^not op but I like that it's relatively transparent, and they tell you pretty much exactly what you need to improve on within a certain time frame to get promotion. Your CDC advisor and staffing coordinators can then help you land specific projects or modules that will help you gain those necessary skills. I feel like the system is built to help you succeed

like

Sorry for radio silence - typically only get on this during lunch / in evening. Agree with all of the above. One add- it feels very predictable and bottoms up. For example, I have bi weekly feedback sessions, which provide pretty good insight into how I am performing- this is reflected in my end of case review. And the end of case reviews roll up to the CDC placement. Nothing has ever been a surprise given the regularity and candid nature of our ongoing feedback process.

like

So OP, what do you like about your system?

@bain- interesting split. Outside of bonus, I think performance impacts staffing opportunities. Given such a large number fall into the same rating, I imagine this just means more word of mouth / networking versus differentiation on performance level?

People don't network to get staffed, at least at the offices I've been in. There's a staffing manager who oversees the process. He or she tries to balance the teams to make sure none are too stacked and none are too screwed. So performance does impact staffing, just not in the usual way.

Is it really worth it to proceed with a company like Amazon for 25k+. I live in CA so $ is imp but I do have a toddler so WLB is also imp. Both role are Sr. MGR.

I'm a first yr attorney at an insurance firm and am in the process of interviewing for an in-house position at a tech company. The position is pretty much generalist, but I get the impression I'd be working mostly on SaaS and partnership transactions. I definitely think I would like the transactional work better, but I am concerned about the long-term earning potential vs. partnership. How common is it to eventually make $400k+ in-house/how difficult is it to transition back to a firm? Thanks!

Hi! This is my first post. Nice to meet you all! I would like to know how certifications like AWS Solutions Architect and/or Azure Administrator 104 (got both) impact the yearly compensation, mainly in Spain (Barcelona). I have just graduated and have under one year experience in the field (cloud consultant). I would like some advice as everything is pretty new to me.

Thank you!

P.D: I am pretty happy in my company,I am learning a lot :) I do not plan to move out.

Fellow enterprise tech sales fish, I’m interested to hear your perspective. I’ve been in a rut lately and seriously considering leaving sales. I think it’s primarily fueled by one thing:
After a 6 mo cycle I closed a large deal (4x the average deal size) prior to receiving delayed 2022 comp plans. The deal counts as a 2022 deal. On last years comp plan it would’ve paid out at 10%. This year it pays out at a measly 4%.

How do you/have you navigated your way through and out of these situations?

A quick note about what I’ve experienced, in my decade long career, is the real advantage of MBB or FAANG - it gives you a shot at stretch roles that are outside your expertise. Not all the time or even most of the time compared to better candidates with specific experience for the role but gives you this wildcard shot at a vast array of opportunities.
