For those at the senior or manager level in accounting/tax — what factors actually drive long-term comp growth? Is it staying in public longer, switching firms, specializing, moving to industry, or something else entirely?

First, You’ll never feel like you’re making enough money. If you really want comp growth, switch companies every 1-2 years. You maximize the “sign on premium” but It looks terrible on resumes. That said, you’ll be the first one passed up for any promotion and potentially the first one laid off in bad economic times. Public accounting is a “get rich slow” business. I’m making 3x more (probably 2x inflation adjusted) than I ever thought I would when I graduated. Slow and steady wins the race.

Pick a growing geographic area
Pick the area firm whose partners are winning
Pick a hot, growing industry in that market
Learn to delegate when you can trust a staff
Learn how to sell consulting work
Learn how to value bill
Develop niche industry or technical expertise
Work for people who have clout
Understand provisions but don’t pigeon hole
Avoid AWM and SALT AWM at all costs

Bingo….

Switching is best for short term growth. If you have the chops, sticking with a firm for the long haul is the shortest path to partner and the best comp most can get to

You get paid more in tax the longer you stay compared to industry but comp maxes out at certain point at specific level. However that could change due to PE investment as EBITA is more important which means reducing cost which is labor. Partners are now getting paid less cash. Workload is more for less pay. Work will get pushed to other countries and AI agents. USA will mainly be a business development market because the work will get done elsewhere.

Max pay is equity partner and be good at sales. However, you need to demonstrate knowledge to get to senior manager level and get opportunity to sell. Outside of equity partner comes large cap industry director of tax. Likely need federal + provision for that. Then it's prob W-2 "partner" at any firm. Last path is prob picking right tech company and getting RSUs before buyout/IPO.

So I've been at my job for 5+ years as a data analyst/back office support team. I made my way up into making a little over $40k. I've been WFH the past 2 yrs and overtime more than half my team has now been pulled out to work for a diff department which resulted in me taking 90% of our daily tasks to handle. I'm at a point where the salary I'm getting is disrespectfully low for all the work I do. Should I ask for a raise? And if so, how do I go about asking without sounding greedy.
