For those of you who have left law and are now working in a business discipline (management, marketing, strategy etc), did you rewrite or tweak your resume before applying to jobs? Did you include a cover letter with your applications?

As someone who left the business world for the law I can tell you that you should always tweak your resume to fit the role. And there's a growing debate about cover letters. I know there are quite a few news articles out there now indicating that the tech industry is fighting against cover letters because they are obsolete. However, I used mine to craft a story and explain my career change. It might help you, but also the screening AI may screen you out before your cover letter makes your case for you.

like

Second this. I also think cover letters are more important for smaller orgs that have a cause. For example, if you're applying for an environmental think tank to do policy work, a cover letter will definitely help you. But if you're applying to be discovery counsel at Google... Probably not.

As a hiring partner, I prefer cover letters still because: 1) I learn more about who a person really is through the story they tell in a cover letter than I ever do through a resume that looks very similar to every other resume I’m viewing; and 2) the ability to convey oneself in a grammatically appropriate, punctuation-correct manner comes through in the cover letter far more effectively than in the resume. I suspect this latter factor may not be as critical in the tech world, but is still very relevant in law.

You’re going to need to tell a story about your skills and why they are applicable to the role. I had to quit big law before anyone took me seriously and ended up going out on my own and starting a distribution company (motorcycles) before really being able to get traction in the corporate world. Also - depending on what you do in the law - it’s going to be a pretty dramatic pay cut.

Looking to get a bit of insight on breaking into tech working as an executive assistant after working for BigLaw for 20+ years.

I've been applying to tech companies for executive assistant positions - in particular, remote work positions - and I have yet to get a nibble.

I'm extremely tech savvy and have a lot of initiative but I am afraid that these companies are put off by how long I've been working assuming that I am a middle-aged woman that is not able to go with the flow.

Okay so I’m a newly licensed attorney in a very conservative part of TX. I just got my first job offer and I was worried at first thinking that I was in “Trump” territory, but I tested the waters in my interview and spoke about police injustices and how prosecutor’s job is not only to protect victims, but also defendants from police injustices. I have to let them know by tomorrow, but thoughts on if this is a good career move for someone who wants to work in transactional work-RE or Bankruptcy?

I am looking to enter big law. I had a clerkship on a state Business Calendar and am a current first year litigation associate where I have prepared for a trial, taken and defended depositions, and have extensive motion writing practice in tech, business, and employment cases. I’m so miserable every day is painful. I want to go tell pre-law school me it’s not worth the debt because you will hate this career and then feel trapped by the debt. I’ve been practicing in both big law (many yrs ago) and now in-house for over 10 years. Quite often I struggle because I don’t find work fulfilling. I’ve been in industries that allegedly have greater cause (healthcare) but was eventually disappointed by the corporate bureaucracy and went to a cutting-edge tech company for intellectual stimulation. Still I struggle. Should I try public interest? Not that I don’t need the money but it’s hard to work when I am so detached and find it meaningless
