I mean when you update your linked in they will know anyway. But I mean I did tell my specific company in my last day in the office during the goodbye lunch. But outside of that I was just stating that I’ll be going into a specific industry.
I always leave it vague with folks who aren’t close friends. You never know if someone will turn you in for a non compete violation or something.
Are you going to a competitor? If so, keep your mouth shut. Are you going to a client? If so, then no issue disclosing. Are you going to neither? Then I’d probably keep it close to the vest. Firms will get rid of you the instant you hold no value. You have value if you go to a client. You don’t if you’re not.

Double check your employment contract to see if you have any obligations for notice to your firm. KPMG has a two month “cooling off” period for directors and above if going to a competitor.

I provided notification when my last day was on my last day. Kept my instant messaging turned off that day. Told the few people that I felt deserved to know what the situation was. I don't have any need to do LinkedIn.
It's nobody's business. Or tell them that you're working for a governmental organization whose name you cannot disclose due to national security.
