For young students interested in going into the supply chain sector, what pieces of information would you say to help them ensure that it would be a good fit for them? Mine would be to develop thick skin and get comfortable with direct feedback and confrontation.

Develop soft skills first. Excellent communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and leadership abilities are required for supply chain effectiveness. Develop these abilities through participating in activities such as group projects, volunteer work, and leadership roles in student groups.

The supply chain industry is always changing. Read industry magazines, attend conferences, and network with specialists in the sector to stay up to date on current trends and breakthroughs.

What magazines, conferences etc do you know of, do you find interesting and how do you stay up to date on trends?

It would be best to be very flexible and deal with constructive feedback in a positive manner. You should also have a lot of common sense and an analytical mind. Be comfortable with constantly having to solve many issues everyday and applying solutions to prevent further issues. It really shows in supply chain who are the ones that are able to critically think and those that are just doing the motions.

Certifications such as Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP) and Certified in Production and Inventory Management (CPIM) can provide a competitive edge when seeking employment in the supply chain industry.

Building relationships with professionals in the supply chain industry can be invaluable when it comes to finding job opportunities and gaining insights into the industry. Attend industry events, join professional organizations, and connect with professionals on LinkedIn.

The supply chain industry offers a wide range of roles and opportunities. Be open to exploring different areas within the industry and taking on new challenges. This will help you gain a well-rounded understanding of the industry and develop a diverse set of skills.

Lots of great suggestions here! For a long term career in supply chain don’t jump from role to role too quickly. Target 2 1/2 years minimum in each role whether demand planning , supply, procurement , etc. most effective people spent time in manufacturing or distribution or both.

Thick skin is correct, humility, emotional intelligence jn leadership and communication. Develop data analytics skills whether excel, power bi. Leverage lean six sigma

Continue to educate while in role with applied certifications in lean six sigma , project management , trainings in situational influence.

It all makes you more effective. Not a simple answer.

I’m an industrial engineer, MBA, MS Supply Chain, I’ve spent time in engineering , distribution operations , mfg operations , supply chain roles, lean, six sigma, PMP, strong leadership training

I use it all. In supply chain. ALL.

I'd say grab every chance to connect with new people. You will find it very useful in the future. I also agree with being comfortable with direct feedback.

helpful

This is a great question. Try to stay in your current role and gain as many skills and experience as possible. Moving too much is not advisable.

Oh wow! We've got a lot of suggestions. I want to add that asking for others' input, ideas and opinions is okay.

Networking question here. A retired partner at the firm I used to work out reached out to me recently about attending an afternoon during the week (b4 4/30) with one of his long time clients. The partner and I have kept in touch since I joined my new firm and I feel like his invitation is a great networking opportunity since the client (who I have worked with before) is on a number of boards. Torn as how to request off as an S3. Could materialize to nothing but could be good for reconnecting.
