Found out today that I bulged a disc in my back for the second time in 18 months. Happened after an 80 hour week with 2 closings. Tried to do a lighter version of my usual workout that weekend. PT said I should generally not be working those hours ever with existing disc issues.

I assume there are biglaw folks with disc issues. How have others survived? Open to moving in-house if it’s better for my health (especially as I am (I guess, I was) an athlete and fitness is important to me.

Confirming also I have been/am using FMLA. Have also tried a reduced schedule, but that doesn’t seem to prevent the huge spikes around deal closings as a deal lawyer.

I’m so sorry. I hope you have a good plan in place for recovery.

I developed sciatica after many 15-hour days. I improved through PT, strengthening my core and back, taking up swimming — and working fewer hours.

I also switched to a sitting/standing desk and Herman Miller chair, and worked on safe posture while at my desk.

like

I had fewer back issues with the Herman Miller — but my prior set-up was not ergonomic at all.

The law firm supplied the Herman Miller chairs to everyone.

I suspect any desk and chair set up that you consciously select to accommodate your needs will be sufficient. I don’t think it’s necessary to spend a lot of money.

Yeah, have been looking into this too but I’ve used a lot of my FMLA hours already for all the PT I’ve had over the past 18 months. Will def continue to explore it though!

I had two recruiters today reschedule a meeting. And this is the second time rescheduling. Honesty, not sure what value recruiters bring. Is this common now? Is it hard to have respect for people’s time and their schedule? Reschedule once I can understand. But twice is just stupidity. I hope AI wipes out all bad recruiters who don’t give af. Sorry for the vent. Maybe it’s just my bad luck then.
