If you have a billables quota, having those 3 hours a day to work while commuting will on net mean more sleep and more time with your family. Plus commuter rail is more consistent than driving. Your partners will know you have to leave at a certain time to catch that train and be less inclined to drag that meeting on for 20 minutes longer. Will arrive at office and home at a more regular time, and if there's a delay its considered less in your control so significant others and bosses can't get mad.
One of my partners used to drive into NYC from NJ, but gave up and is now commuting into the city. Driving was too stressful and expensive. I myself also live in NJ and I commute as well. Takes me 1.5hrs door to door, but I use that time to relax and catch up on sleep. My firm also provides car service after 8. If I'm done by 7:30, I will try to finish up other non urgent work so that I leave at 8 and have a car ride home. It's much faster to go home at night by car than commuting then so it makes more sense to work till 8 to get the car and at the same time finish up some other work.
(cont.) to get home to my family and see my wife and kids (3 & 1). Thoughts?
They don’t comp your cab after a certain time?
Hahahahah - you think you’re allowed to leave before 8.
You going from NY, NJ, or CT?
There is no amount of money that would be enough for me to commute from NJ to NYC
Train. Prepare for the day and bill a bit on the way in, clean up your time (keep an email draft of the day and have your admin enter it the next day), and bill a bit on the way back.
I work in the Bronx (down by Yankee Stadium) and so I drive because commuting by rail makes no sense (I would have to go into Harlem, switch to a subway, and then have a 10 minute walk). Not to mention because I’d need to go into Manhattan (train doesn’t stop near my office in the Bronx), the train commute would cost me about $500 per month (parking at the station, monthly ticket into Manhattan is almost $300, and I would need a monthly subway pass too), whereas I park in the lot next to my building for a total of $175 a month (and I don’t have to pass tolls on my normal route).
If commuting via train was a viable, comparable option, I think I would do that. Don’t get me wrong, I love not being beholden to a time table for the train, leaving when I am good and ready and not stressing, BUT it’s an hour’s commute in annoying traffic each way for me (although when kids are not in school, driving is actually beautiful and only about 35-40 minutes). I listen to a lot of podcasts and that helps, but if I took the train, I could read, watch something on my phone, get work done, etc. I very often feel like I lose a large chunk of my day to commuting because I literally have to focus on driving.
There are absolutely pros and cons each way, but I definitely think you get more “down” time when you commute on local transit, especially if you have to sit in traffic, which can be unpredictable.
