Make sure you tailor your resume to read more brand work and show moments of overlap with those teams directly if any, or your strategic and brand thinking in general
I transitioned from search into more of a planning and strategic role that heavily involves brand strategy. Things that helped me massively and would cut down transition times are reading so you understand the fundamental principles of brand marketing, quite different from performance marketing..almost feels like polar opposites sometimes: ie performance marketing (search especially) you're looking for high intent category audiences where you can convert the demand.
Whereas when I transitioned into broad planning, awareness / branding, it took me a while to get my head around broad reach planning ie how do you make the advertising effective..
So had to learn foundational strategic concepts such as category entry points, creative salience, distinctiveness ect and also how to plan broadly effectively (which coming from a performance marketing background felt inherently wasteful to me).
3 foundational books that will set you up for the transition in thinking are:
How Brands Grow (1 and 2)
The long and short of it
How not to plan.
Hope this helps,
It took me years to transition out of social. I think all the experience and skills you learn in that role are valid but you really need to be able to speak on and have some expertise on brand strategy or general marketing. Choose a lane/area of expertise you want to transition to and show that you know what you’re talking about. Good luck!
I transitioned from Art Director to Digital/Engagement Strategist. In my experience (and in those of my colleagues), it is much easier to transition in-house than by switching companies. In house, people know you and are willing to work with you to provide you the opportunities to expand your skillset.
