The presumption being 1 year without a good raise invalidates public accounting as a good career choice?
K2 - Yes? We work the most hours in public accounting and we're already grossly underpaid by industry standards even before the "raise" this year. Colleagues who are two years in are jumping out to jobs that are paid as much as an M2 in public (Bay Area) . How is that justified? I can see the value of someone wanting to make it to partner but otherwise, what value is there?

Paternity leave is insanely good.

Lol for pet leave.
The public accounting route is a lot easier to get the hours I need for my certification

It’s not all about the money, it’s about the flexibility that I get while working in PA. Additionally I get to work across different clients and industry while in PA. Ps in PA you know when you will get promoted and that there will be a raise, unlike private where you usually get promoted when a spot opens up or a need arises and raises are on the lower part ie 2-5%
Raises in private firms are way higher than public lol
Not what you asked for, since I just put in my notice today, but I was planning on staying at least another year just to see what manager was like. It was really built up as being the best level, and I wasn’t going to have to travel due to COVID. And the exit ops were cool. It’s nice getting called back on almost every job I applied for.
I’m in a small office with mostly long-term clients and extremely low turnover (usually one person per year). The crapshoot is getting put on clients in the larger city that our office is attached to...them it’s much more similar to what you’re describing.
