Ok all of you looking for the inspirational comment, I’ll bite. Not sure what LoS you are in OP, but at least in audit, I find that the people who think it’s easy are usually not the brightest bulbs in the bunch. It’s easy to blindly follow prior year but that’s not real auditing. If you really try to think about all of the possible risks that could lead to a material misstatement and how Management does or does not address them it’s really challenging, sometimes even overwhelming. It sounds to me like you are smart enough to acknowledge what you don’t yet understand which is a really good first step.
And as others have said... just think about all the things you’ve learned over the past 2 years. Give yourself some credit!
A long essay about one’s personal experience and perseverance is coming, I can almost smell it
The more like story is "i quit and things are much better now"
A bit of perspective....B4 recruits the best talent from universities. We are all smart, driven, and competitive (whether we believe or not). Your first year is probably the first time where your peer group is really comparable to you, not a mix of interests and skills like in high school and college. As a result, everyone feels stupid (but few will admit) because you are working with brilliant people and folks with more experience.
Take a breath and really try not to compare yourself to others. Be patient and you will have a moment soon where someone asks you for help and you realize that you know the answer and can reflect on how much you really have learned.
I started keeping a list of the different things I worked in during the year. Youd be amazed act how much you forget you did in a year.
Gosh, everyone is soooo modest here 🙄😳
This post speaks to me on a deeply spiritual level
Give it 6 months, you will learn and grow.
(Oops, meant to say “I think that contributed a lot to feeling like I’m not smart enough.” In my comment)
Don’t beat yourself up! You’re plenty smart enough. It’s just tough when you’re constantly working on something new to you. Good luck in your new office! You got this.
@pwc1’s comment — can someone please give us one lol i could use some inspiration and encouragement
100% agree with PwC and I’ve said the same thing myself. It’s my third year and I legit feel like Audit has made me dumber. I found that at the beginning I was over thinking a lot of things which made it challenging. Once you realize it’s not as hard as it seems and try to think of it simplistically, it becomes a bit easier in my experience.
I think that everyone feels the way you are at some point in their career. You just have to remember that if you weren’t good enough to be there, you wouldn’t be - your firm wants you there because there is something about you that is good and great!
Also, technical skills are not always the only thing that makes someone good at their job. Focus on what you are good at and then do it every day with 110%! The technical skills will come with time, I am still learning every day and still get things wrong every single day
I was just saying this to my coworker today.
Yes. All the damn time.
