Getting a car?

What do y'all think about the ~550 for parking ~100 for insurance to have a car in the city (let's assume I own it outright) versus renting one when I need it?

PwC's National discount is good enough that a weekend midsize out of LGA is ~125, plus ~75 for the cab to get it.

Struggling with the 8k per year to park it and insure it, but also struggling with having to waste a few hours to get to LGA.

I’m a Zip car user. When I need it, I can pick whatever up whenever near me. Definitely cheaper than owning / parking in the city over a full year. If you’re not interested in Zip, I’d check out Kayak rentals. They usually have pretty low deals across the city!

Remember your vehicle registration too. Its steep in NYC. Unless you're really careful and always park in the garage, you're likely to get at least a couple parking or camera tickets a year too. I had a car here, and as soon as I didn't need it to get to different work sites, I sold it. If you get a Costco Membership, you get 25% off the major rental brands through costco travel. Also free upgrade to midsize and free 2nd driver. Chase Sapphire Reserve card includes free primary rental insurance. Unless you're gonna drive places weekly. Just rent, Uber, zip, etc.

Before moving to the city I drove a 2019 (new at the time) BMW X3. My payment with tax was $460. Point being that $550 for parking is outrageous and hard to justify.

Ended up buying a car during the pandemic and park it on the street, so save the 500 dollars a month. That said, it’s a pain in the neck to have to move it weekly (street parking)

like

Street parking is free. For us here in BK, only once a week (not twice) for a 1.5 hour window. But it also discouraged the car being used as then I need to look for new parking.

You know there are rental car places throughout the city, including two National locations in Manhattan, right?

We are having the same discussion in our family every few months. We live in Manhattan, near GW Bridge.
With various discounts (Amazon prime, Expedia, friends' corporate discount), we can get a car in the city for $67-$80. If we are okay with going over the bridge to New Jersey (bus across the bridge, walking or taking a taxi), we can get a car for less than $40.

In previous years (read, pre COVID), we drove much more - camping, upstate visits, etc - but now, you know..

I think that it doesn't make sense to own a car in Manhattan given the lack of parking spots, alternate parking days, insurance, etc. But, again, we drive much less now.

We have a Manhattan garage at $275/month after competitively shopping (we walk 7 mins to get there). Still, the economics do not justify having a car in NYC - we only bought one due to our high COVID caution.

My husband and I spent 15 and 7 years, respectively, blissfully car-less in NYC, using subways and Zipcar and Uber as needed. 🤷‍♀️

My first year in NYC i put all the money i would spend on a car in the bank and withdrew from it for car rentals. That helped me judge how much I actually needed a car. I ended up not needing a car as much as i thought and could better budget car rental expenses in the years after.

like

The only reason to have a car here is if you need to drive somewhere for work every day or there is no public transit near where you live and it’s not possible for you to work from home

I grew up in NYC too. And yes I commuted to school on the bus but unless you want to stay permanently esconsed on the island of Manhattan, having no car is a pretty big problem. When you're young and single taking a hop of the metro north or the LIRR with your cute weekend bag is totally doable. Even shlepping yourself to a rental place is no big deal - even if you have to go to the airport. Try doing that with a couple of kids and the entire family's crap in tow. Try carrying just one car seat on the subway while wrangling a toddler. And also, when you don't own a car you have no flexibility. When you take public transportation you're wedded to the schedule of the bus/train/ect. When you have a three year old having a meltdown, you're not always going to be able to leave at exactly 10:10 AM. Or you reserve a car, only to discover that's the morning that junior decides to get the stomach flu. When you have a car, your car seat is installed; you can leave/return at your convenience; and you can change your plans easily. Maybe you don't need those things but not everybody has your life.

I’ve used Turo (the Airbnb for cars) for weekend trips. They’ve only been recently re-approved for New York - previously I’ve had to take the path to Jersey for a car or sometimes the owner has come to me.

Check them out, you can get much nicer cars than traditional rental companies for less.

I just checked and it looks like a slow return to NY as there are no cars available here yet. Sometimes you get lucky and the owner will come to you but typically I’ve found them within a few blocks of a path station.

FYI. Work at PWC. Use the Avis code. Don’t have the issues with finding cars in the city. If you are willing to Uber to Hoboken the cars there are significantly cheaper and can return to an Avis in the city

I wouldn’t pay that much to park. My building has garage that’s $235 per month for residents, and that’s pushing what I consider worth it. You can use Uber and rent cars for less than you’re going to spend.

What neighborhood are you in? Garage on Houston and west side hwy is around $350 a month

We have a car and live in Manhattan. Monthly car payment is $400 and parking is $430. The car was primarily for weekend trips to my in-laws and for golf but now my wife uses to drive to work. In addition to these monthly expenses, you have insurance and garage attendant holiday tips. Plus you have regular maintenance on the car. The economics of owning a car does not work in Manhattan. Have you looked into black cars that would take you to the airport? My sister-in-law used them when they lived in West New York and went to EWR for work travel!

Rent them in the city not at LGA. “Out of cars” is because you aren’t reserving far enough in advance amid the more recent covid-demand spike.

I own a car in the city and I have never found any math that leads to it being cheaper to own than rent. Only exception is if I NEED to use the car daily.

Friend lives in UES (86th) and pays <250 for the garage in Costco in the BX.

For context, the garages around them quoted ~$500

Oh mate, not sure it’s worth it. I live in North NJ and I pay about $500 all in for insurance and monthly payment. That’s just too much.

Have a car in the city and never ever ever doing without it again. Spent 10+ years on the car rental/zipcar wagon. Never again.

Use spot hero to book a spot and it’s 10-15% cheaper on the monthly rate (be careful about oversized). Or most garages are hurting and you can make a deal with them. Paying $150 less per month now than I was pre-pandemic for the same reserved spot.

I found parking with Icon for $279 a month including all taxes and as a Manhattan resident get 8% back. Go to their website. In midtown they are offering 229 at some locations. Assuming these are empty lots around midtown corporate towers. Mine is at Penn station which is an easy walk from my place in Chelsea.
