There are reasons why "Show me the money" is a well know phrase and "Show me the title" is not. Take the cash, but negotiate for an explicit performance review in writing at the six month mark. And ask your performance evaluator what she needs to see after six months to support your promotion.
@OP - yes not worth it
Consulting companies are setting up “cohorts” which are basically compensation limits per title
The title you get will limit how much you can make as long as you retain that title
If they are willing to give it to you in six months they should be willing to give it to you now. Which says that “six month promise”. Is just that. A carrot with no real commitment.
Id be the janitor for 200k a year....... People that care about titles are stupid.... Letting ego rule their minds
Be smart dude. You’re getting a pay bump you want, and if you do good you’ll get promo which would be a larger pay bump then if you fight for title and get annual raise.
I did this and regretted it. Despite solid performances I had to wait 18 months for the promotion. It’s not easy to convince new people and new network your value in 6 months.
Go for money! Title will follow within 6 months.
Again, what firm. Details please
Would not
Title is what the world knows and what positions you for the next role.
I did when I joined D 5 years ago. I interviewed as a Manager but they offered (and I accepted) SC for the same $
Deloitte is known to bring people in a lower title than what they had at other consulting firms. I’ve known 3 people who took the offer. I’d go for it if the salary bump is 20% or greater, else you may hurt your chances of switching jobs into another consulting firm. Industry doesn’t care imho
Thanks everyone especially Accenture 2, I pushed back and just got called that they are providing the title as well. So pumped!
I wouldn’t take it.. It can hurt in the long run..
Sure. You can always bust expectations and show you should be an accelerated promote.
No - if they are willing to provide you the comp then they are willing to provide the title. Just got to stick your ground.
Title usually comes with expectations/metrics that may be difficult to hit in your first year at a new firm so joining at a lower level now may help set you up for success in the long run.
Don't do it. You will have to make your brand and network. If you think you can get promoted here then stay.. If not, then go ahead.. But you need a good counselor who can help you get promoted
If it’s consulting, it’s a risk. HR always pushes that bs but ur promotion will be viewed heavily on the project ur assigned to and ur role. Then they will say “oh u did well, but there were other people who had 2-3 years at this level and they were next in line for promotion, so maybe next year!” It’s all crap. If I were u, I’d verbally accept and get ur current firm to match the offer.
OP you did the right thing to push for money and title. You would not have been promoted in 6 months even if you were #1...
OP, I came in half way through the performance year and was promoted to M after 2 full years.
You probably will get smaller raises until you’re promoted as you might be at the top of the salary band. But this is common at Deloitte. It can even be a benefit, depending on the level, to allow you time to establish your network before the metrics start to kick in. Otherwise if you come in at the higher level they may be setting you up to fail. Just ask if you can go up next year if you’re kicking ass.
