Got a BS in Advertising in 2018 and have good knowledge of Adobe (photoshop, indesign, illustrator). Agency experience for 6 months doing PR, 1 year at marketing agency (google ads, SEO, analytics) and haven’t been able to work for a year due to visa processing so I’ve been doing freelance work: websites, social media… I believe I want to do strategy at an agency but also like consulting firms. I know my experience is a bit over the place so if anyone has any advice on what’d be a good fit!

I have an offer to start a career as FA or FR for NY LIFE. This would be my first time as a FA. What would be your advise? Should I go this independent track (just commissions) to start with OR should I go for a support track (like client service, associate, para planner, etc?) for another firm? Give me some light here please!

Is IB worth the sacrifice of WLB? Obvious pay is really good but are the prestige and pay worth it if you’re planning on only doing it for a couple years?

Currently working at an IRA with great WLB. Honestly I love my job, the firm, and people I work with.

Also doing MBA part time at a T15 school. Thinking about switching to IB but I’ve done my research and I think I would burn out of IB in two years but I might be ok with that for the opportunities after.

I’d like to better understand if it’s better to stay in consulting with a well-defined career path or to move to Google/Facebook/Amazon with a good level and having the consciousness of being promoted is really hard.

Anyone made a successful switch from the Ad Agency world to consulting early on in their career? What drove you to it, was it worth it? Did you get the professional growth opportunities you were looking for?

Subject matter expert with my CPA. I’m completely fed up with the compliance aspect of public accounting Tax but don’t mind the technical side. Does it make sense to become an attorney to get out of compliance work and still do something related to specialty tax?
Or do I just go the college professor route? Wouldn’t mind working @ BNA or something like that either but I’m seriously fed up with everything about tax compliance and can’t keep doing this

I currently work in Private (GA) Aviation & have for some time (about 12 years) I’m currently making the switch to the Department of Aviation and am unsure if I should ditch my current job (in private) and go full force with the DOA & embrace this new opportunity educationally and gather as much experience as I can or keep both jobs even though I’d be working 80hr weeks.. A former client director colleague has gone in-house as CMO. They are now asking me (currently ECD) to join and set up an agency-like creative team to up-level everything from brand to sales materials. It's a good mgmt opp and good creative is a definite possibility, but I'm conflicted. Aency BS would be nice to step away from, but I think I'm still bought into the notion that agencies are superior and in-house is where washed-up creatives go to die. Any regrets from those that made the jump?

I’m graduating in December, with a background in environmental economics and policy. Consulting didn’t work out this cycle. Made it to final rounds for Bain and Kearney but in the end didn’t get an offer. I want to recoup and try again, but I’m worried that once I’m out of undergrad the door will be closed to starting in consulting.

What can I do to make this happen? I have friends and connections at Bain and Kearney and the other firms as well, but not sure if it’s feasible now.

I make 135k gross/year & am looking at apartments in a tier 2 city. 2k for a 1 bedroom or 3k for a 2 bedroom? I’ll be working from home and living by myself & a pup. It may seem obvious, but in my experience partners value trial experience over anything else, so get it however you can. For example, my firm will favor a former prosecutor who has seen the courtroom a lot but has no civil litigation experience (not even a depo) over a seasoned associate who has only second chaired cases with a partner but hasn’t tried a case. Even trying a case and losing gives you credibility at my firm because you still did it.

What’s it like in these SF Bay tech companies ? With the crazy benefits and high pay ? Any tax folks here can shed light on difference between that and PA?

A parent of one of my students told admin she thinks it's irresponsible that I won't be grading over Christmas break. I let the students know to get any work they need graded in before the break and I'll get it to it during our workdays in January. Apparently that's not fast enough for her 🙄. I am generally uncomfortable when I’m around my mother-in-law’s husband.

While he is overall a decent guy, his anger issues, yelling at his wife for the slightest issue, and insulting nature makes me uncomfortable and triggers my own anger due to his blatant disrespect for just about everyone around him.

My mother-in-law says he’s worked on things, but it’s been 10 years of this and I’m not sure I want such behavior around my wife and our kids since we’re trying to conceive soon (cont).

C-suite consulting leaders: why are you buying creative agencies?

I am interested in pivoting from an agency into a traditional business consultancy role. I have start-up tech experience and four years of Strategy experience for media clients. Are there any projects folks in consulting would recommend I take on to add to build on to a resume? From the outside looking in, it seems like there is an overlap in the core competencies of a strong strategist at an agency and a consultant.

Does anyone from agency world to “cagency” world have tips on learning the consulting side? I’m finding as an experienced hire, I lack in some skills such as economics and budgeting.
