Got an offer at Amazon with heavy international travel. Is it true it’s economy only even if it’s 30 hour trip ? Also this comp plan is something else...any advice appreciated !

Since the job specifically requires significant international travel and makes you fly economy, that would be a strong no from me. Travel alone takes a big hit on your body but but to travel in discomfort frequently for long distances is even worse.

like

I can’t handle economy for 10+ hr flights more than once a quarter

I am not in an international role but have done some travel to Europe. I did not get first class but I do believe at a certain threshold of travel it does become available. This will also depend on what your specific role is. I had carried over status and miles which has facilitated routine upgrades.

I was hired into a similar Product role with what I suspect is a similar RSU structure. I would liken it to a sports contract where it is backend loaded.

In year one it is salary, relocation, and a cash bonus. Year two is salary and cash. In these years I did take a pay hit from where I had been by about 33%.

By end of year 3, you can think of it like you will now have earned 50% of your shares. By end of year 4, you then have all of your shares. This is where the compensation can become much more lucrative. By the time I vested, my shares had more than doubled in value and my comp shot up by nearly double.

If I look at what my comp would have likely been in consulting even as a PPED over the 4 years versus Amazon, Amazon comes out about 15% higher, dollar for dollar. The tax and equity structure however, is more advantageous versus a typical partnership model.

I would choose the Amazon route again given comp and the actual work and learning/development experience but I can acknowledge the pros and cons.

Congratulations on the offer and good luck whichever way you go.

They absolutely encourage tenure. You get badge color changes to reflect your tenure. Leadership tends to not turnover much either.

They offer additional RSU’s to those they want to retain based on performance rating and level.

Amazon has challenge 1, where talent has lots of options and they head to Facebook, Google, Microsoft, and other tech firms. There is a constant fight for tech talent and at Amazon, tech is where the best pay often tends to be. So people leave for more money. Google has buildings going up all over and are poaching talent heavily.

2. Amazon is intense and to your point, there aren’t perks like free food, gym, massage, etc. people leave for more WLB and more comfortable benefits.

Lot of boomerangs though too. The culture suits certain personality types. Coffee and tea are free but thats about it. Otherwise its food trucks, cafeterias and vending machines.

All my buddies at Amazon have said the same thing about travel (no business). Amazon is super lean and cheap in their words

likefunny

Do you mind sharing the type of the offer and role?

like

I think the RSU vesting cliff is like Y1-5%, Y2-5%, Y3-45%, Y4-45%. You basically have to stay to years 3 and 4 to fully realize it. However most people don’t last that long.

like

Sr product manger. My base was cut by 30ish percent but with RSUs I could be looking at a 60 percent bump in overall comp but that’s over a 4 year vesting period with various percent vest each year

like

MSFT1 — yes, all offers I’ve heard about are very heavy towards the end. A 4 year vesting schedule that’s 5/15/40/40 isn’t uncommon.

like

True about the travel restrictions. You didn’t provide specifics on your comp offer so I assume you hit the max of $160k (or did they raise it to $175k), plus significant equity on a hyperbolic vesting schedule. That’s been the case for a long time as they want folks to stick around for the long term. I believe you also get paid on a monthly basis.

like

It comes in basically quarterly increments in year 3 and 4

Definitely true from what my friends there say, no one there flies business unless it’s their own dime

like

Yep more at discretion of manager. Given that we’re in Seattle though, almost all international flights would possibly be okay to fly business since they’re all long flights

like

In two cases I sat next to amazon employees in first class, not sure if they just got upgraded though.

like

They either paid to be there or had enough miles. They did not pay for upgrades tickets

Congrats!! Also very interested as to the roll/group

Multi-grain

likefunny

Any chance that’s the group where amazon employees try to directly deal with manufacturers in Asia and help them to bypass middlemen or have them produce amazon brand stuff?

Why does PM have heavy intl travel?

Perhaps it’s hardware

Nothing better than when we fly to India in Qsuite, economy on international trips is atrocious. Honestly even if you had to pay out of pocket the 50-200 bucks to upgrade it would probably be worth it
