That's awesome to hear, in glad you've found something! What are you enjoying most about it?
I appreciate that! So far I’m enjoying the creative and strategic freedom to really build something together. I know there are a lot of risks, but also a ton of potential to be a part of something early on. I also find that our client relationships are more like true partnerships. Our agency is a startup vibe with experience to back it, and the clients match that as well. It lends to more openness, less corporate red tape, etc. I’m finding that I’m just less stressed so far. There is also more genuine flexibility with balancing work and life. It helps that I believe in the company’s founder and vision, and have a ton of respect for this person. So fingers crossed it continues progressing this way!
How are you getting on? Any prospects given the current climate?
I’m dabbling in the idea as I’ve recently been laid off.
Will share a bowl that has great tips on this.
Thank you for these helpful resources! I started at a small independent agency, vs going freelance just on my own. I believe you are asking about prospects for going freelance on your own, right? I was dabbling in this too. I had some leads from Creative Circle, but didn’t take any and went full-on indie shop instead. I know this climate is tricky, but outside of that I do see a lot of benefits to doing freelance. More flexibility, and sometimes better money! It helps if you are married and on someone else’s benefits, so you just need the hourly wage. Wishing you the best of luck. I believe this all happened to guide us on the path we are meant to be on. You seem like you are putting in the work to do this the right way, so I have no doubt you will be on your path too!

Don’t try to push for changes too quickly. It’ll breed resentment. It’s best to wade in slowly and suggest different ways to do things once people have gotten to know you and your work.
If you believe in the founders at the small indie, you're in a great spot.
The relationship you can have with the very top is what makes it so special for me. It supercharged my career.
There is definitely a startup atmosphere and a startup workload, and unlike a startup you probably don't have good equity that you think will someday make you hundreds of thousands of dollars or more at an IPO or acquisition—so at some way along the journey you'll probably wonder if it's all worth it.
But if you buy in and love the people and the work you get to do, maybe you won't mind a few late nights and scrappy productions. I have immense love for every small indie I've worked at.
Thanks for the great insights. Seems like there is more of a possibility for happiness and fulfillment that I wouldn’t get at the large holding company model, so that’s pretty priceless.
Ahh I miss the small shop life. I left because I was getting burnt out. But I miss when it felt like everyone cared. My new agency is very “plug and chug” - if there’s an easy way out it’s the only way these days 🙁.
Just know that your new team members and coworkers do not want to know anything about the nice perks and resources you had. Small shops are great for learning but are a bit more spartan when it comes to perks. We’ve all been guilty of complaining for stuff like “oh well at my old agency they always put us in nicer hotels”.
Have fun and take the initiative, push your ideas forward, there’s usually less red tape and more room for you to show your talent!
