Sounds like you have two good choices. Present the unconventional one as the reco (just from your comments I think that’s where your head is at). Depending on your client - if it scares them they’ll ask for the back up and you’ve got a solid choice there too.
Took a big swing on a lesser known over a longtime industry pro recently and it turned out so well. Gotta give the newer ones a chance sometimes!
Boom! There’s your answer
If you need a tiebreaker talk to your producer about the two production companies. If the less experienced director is repped by a good company sometimes they’ll invest a lot more into the production to help them become a bigger name.
THIS! Such good advice, if the production company is solid I’d go with the one you feel is best for the creative. At the end of the day the safe choice will get you safe end product.
Which one’s proposed end product seems more likely to cut through the current state of audiovisual clutter, and capture people’s attention?
The unconventional one, I think.
Hire the guy they hired to make the treatment
Agree with everybody on the thread. Recommend the more interesting. But keep the more experienced in your back pocket but don’t show, so your client has one to pick from. They usually will go for the “safer”. Ask your producer which one in their opinion, but I’d also push your producer (they can be conservative). Get everybody onboard.
Putting this though out there too - who do you think would be best to work with or more collaborative? I’ve worked with fancier/more well known directors before who weren’t as easy to work with and sometimes I think I would have gotten better work out of a director who was less well known or didn’t have quite as an impressive reel over a more collaborative director.
Before you eff the rule, how do the reels compare?
One has more experience. So their reel has more big names and brands.
One is more unconventional/niche. But, a solid reel in its own right. Their POV is very clear.
But, I guess, the one with more experience technically has the better reel. Though, I see the potential spread out across a few spots for the one that’s more niche.
It feels like your heart wants to go for the unconventional choice and your head is arguing for the other one. As an editor I can say, some of my best and most successful collabs came from people just trusting their gut about me when maybe my reel didn’t have exactly what they were looking for. So I vote for the unconventional choice.
Just make sure that the new thoughts that he’s given are actually good and not just new. A lot of times we fall into this trap of liking new thoughts just because they are new and we lose track of the core of the idea is.
There’s a rule?
Yes I’ve heard this and find it to be pretty reliable!
Look up other recent work the more experienced director has done that is not on their reel. A reel isn’t always 100% reliable. Some big name directors will phone in it for less sexy jobs, and you should know if you’re getting someone who is going to put the effort in. There’s some great directors who have made real turkeys.
Just flip a coin
