I haven’t, but it’s something I’ll consider doing in the future. I tend to ask for a copy of the employee benefits guide and health insurance contributions, as well as details on holiday/PTO. At my last job, I asked about mat leave policy and the in-house recruiter told me they offered “competitive mat leave”, but wasn’t sure of the specifics. I pressed, she looked into it... turned out that a 6-week mat policy had just been implemented a few months prior. It was a complete joke, and she actually tried to pass this off as being impressive and forward... in 2019. Definitely ask and try to negotiate if you can.
My husband and I have been trying for #2 so I may be pregnant but don’t know yet. The new company does have the 1 yr mat leave benefits kick in. So will have to ask for that to be flexible in my favor without disclosing my potential pregnancy. I wish they made it easier for us without having to ask. IMO, Mat benefits should kick in just like any other benefit would after hiring.
Let’s use covid to change the system. So many things are going to have to change because the virus has forced them to. Whilst companies are being more open minded about things like working from home, now’s the time to demand the other changes we want to see. The one or two year thing isn’t realistic anymore because the employment landscape has completely changed.
Let’s all encourage each other to vocalise the desire for better mat leave at the point of negotiation.
I was hired for my current job when I JUST found out I was expecting. Since I’ve had a loss before, I didn’t feel comfortable disclosing. I wouldn’t sign the offer until they sent their full benefits package and it took them two full weeks to get me the paperwork. Once I confirmed I’d get paid leave without a time limit, I signed.
No harm in trying - after you have an offer in writing of course. If you’re pregnant and are due before you’ll hit that arbitrary 1 year mark, try to negotiate for the full benefits that you’d otherwise get at the 1 year mark. Btw if an offer is rescinded after you disclose your pregnancy that would be outright discrimination.
