My reporting manager hasn't yet reached out to me regarding goal setting, not sure if that happens here. You definitely don't want to let it get out of hand. Just get in touch and get on a new payment plan. If you don't, it could plague your for many years.
It was almost 20 years ago for me. I got overwhelmed and didn’t even take the basic steps of filing for a forbearance. After years of ducking collections, I entered one of their programs, made my payments on time for 12 months, and all that debt was re-aged and then consolidated.
Must be a Sr. Manager thing. I did almost the exact same thing. Two years ago I hit my 20 years in repayment and the rest was written off. I actually had like $27k refunded since the forgiveness was a result of the law changes that counted time in forbearance.
Dodging your debt or the collectors doesn't make it go away. Talking to a collection specialist actually helps with figuring out what other ways you can do to make it right, they wanted to get paid so they will work with you. Ask for "hardship" loan extension if applicable in your situation, some hardship reasons could be: loss of job, death in the family, sickness, moving to a new place, divorce, natural disaster/calamities, unexpected house/car repair, etc. Anything that made you fall behind, communicate,
