Allow me a little commiseration. I am good at my job. This is not a boast, it's just honest. I get along very well with my internal teams and clients. I am always well-prepared. I've been doing this for 20+ years so I know some stuff.
But FOUR TIMES, I have been removed from a client account. You must be thinking, "ummm, maybe you aren't so good at your job. Or maybe you're a total a*hole." But I sincerely do not believe either is the case.
It is exceedingly painful to recall these removals. But I know that each time, it wasn't because I sucked. One was due a very territorial research manager who didn't like that I knew more than he did. Twice was different divisions of the same horrible CPG company that is well-known for being awful clients, and cycling through staff like water. The fourth was the worst, it was a long-time client who just never seemed to like me and canned me after a presentation they didn't think was very good. What can I do?
Well, what I do is continue to do my best work on my current clients, support my teammates, contribute to the agency culture, all of that. And try to remind myself that these clients are not the ultimate judges of my worth. It isn't always easy. That last one still really hurts. But all any of us can do is our best.
This really helped. Thank you :)
Not me personally but I will tell you a bad scenario at my previous workplace. While one of our designers (F) was presenting to the client, they interrupted and said something like I don’t like your style, I want one of the men to present. She was so embarrassed and later there was a bit of a HR crisis to deal with the sexism from the client.
Clients are just people and could be very very wrong. Doesn’t say anything about your personality and skills. If anything, accept it and be glad you may have gotten out of a bad situation.
Yes. I’m former Edelman as well, so I get where you’re coming from - but it happens. Sometimes it’s personality/culture, sometimes it’s gender (🙄), sometimes it’s bc the client sucks, sometimes it’s for legitimate poor work performance. Don’t take it personally unless you’ve received conversations in tandem talking about your work product; if that’s the case, need those conversations and make sure you’re stepping up to meet and exceed expectations.
